Buffy Fans - You watching Ringer Sept 13? (SMG's new show)

I thought Bridget fled to Paris after the shooting. After thinking about it, I realized it was Siobhan.

This twin stuff already makes my head hurt.

I liked it. They’ve certainly thrown a lot of balls in the air right from the start, though, so that keeping the subplots going could prove difficult.

I don’t think it’s unsustainable, if it’s handled skillfully. Any show like this has the potential to turn into a (shudder) “Roswell,” but I choose to be optimistic.

I’m a bit concerned about the cast. SMG and Ioan Griffudd are holding up their ends, but the others so far strike me as kind of meh.

As someone posted above, I’ll be more inclined to stick with it if they emphasize the thriller/noir aspects. If it gets all soapy, I’m out.

Well considering the WB hasn’t even existed since like a year after that… :stuck_out_tongue:

Don’t have much to say about the show yet, but I lol’d at all the jokes about how she was too thin. Back during the last year of Buffy, everyone was saying stuff about how that girl needs to eat a cheeseburger or two.

It could have used more zombies.

Hmmm OK

  1. WRT unsustainability, I mean, sure a good writer could twist the theme around every year. But the title and pilot are screaming “how long can she impersonate her twin?” and the definitive answer is one season. Maybe they can do something interesting after that. But what?

  2. Roswell. OK it killed Alex and aside from her new beau being super hot, this was a major stupid move that ruined the series. But, what exactly are you implying Roswell is an iconic bad example of, that Ringer is also in similar danger of?

I’m nervous about the possible soap opera themes they may use. Rebellious, drug using step-daughter needs mothering. Screwing your best friends husband. Ex addict falls off the wagon. Stuff like that. If they go that route, then I’m gone.

I’m watching because this is supposed to be noir and suspense. Hitchcock seems to be an influence on the pilot. I hope they keep it focused in that direction.

There’s nothing wrong with soapy stories. Lifetime channel produces a lot of them. They just aren’t my thing.

This.

I was underwhelmed by it. I have no idea how Bridget expected to be her sister. Even her mostly “estranged” husband should have realized something was up. I don’t see how this act as her sister can last.

I also wondered what Siobahn did and how Bridget is going to do it.

I was hopeful about the writing when Bridget as Siobahn was being questioned by the FBI and could honestly say “I have no idea where my sister is.” I thought that was very good. However, later she then lies or at least misdirects about the pregnancy and I was expecting her to be able to stick to the truth, as above.

My wife watched it with me, as well as a friend, and I think we were all underwhelmed. We will probably watch a few more and see if it gets better but if it stays like that episode, I won’t be watching it.

Roswell constantly upped the ante every couple of episodes. First one alien hunter. Then two. Then a whole town! Then they’re the alien royal family! Then Alex is killed for no goddamn reason!

Then everything just went off the rails in season three with sitcom-style weirdness and alien babies and huge changes to the characters.

What Justin_Bailey said. But in addition, the behind-the-scenes action that allowed it to happen. Katims and Frakes didn’t seem to have much vision for the show, and were constantly changing their minds in response to various pressures. My wife’s the expert, as she was a fan. Nine years later, long as she continues to take her meds, she doesn’t wake up screaming.

The point being, you need a firm hand on the tiller. The creators of this show don’t have enough of a track record for me to tell.

If I remember right, that was the suits at The WB.

Make it Dawson’s Creek with aliens! No wait, this is too mushy, pump up the action! Oh my god, our show with aliens has too much sci-fi! Dial it back! Never mind, we’re cancelling you!

Then UPN told them “We don’t give a shit what you do, Fox forced us to take Roswell if we wanted Buffy.”

I thought SMG was stellar on “Buffy,” but I’ve learned that the top indicators for quality in a new show are the executive producers/ showrunners and writing staff. Good actors can only elevate shitty material so much, while good showrunners and writers tend to attract good actors. Everything I read about “Ringer” suggests that it’s a case of a mediocre production staff who managed to snag a big name actress. What I’ve read in this thread has done little to persuade me otherwise.

Pass.

You ask a fair question. I personally stopped paying attention before this reveal and missed it as well. If others did too, that doesn’t say good things about the pilot.

Since SMG was far and away the absolute worst thing about Buffy, no.

I think I liked this show, but kept wondering how she managed to do her hair so many different ways? I mean, she’s been living as a stripper, er, sorry, waitress, and an alcoholic for so many years, and suddenly she’s jumped into the life of a society sister and she know exactly what to wear and when, and can do fancy hair to match? Really? I think not.

Also, why in the hell didn’t she just tell the doctor, “Oh, the test must have been incorrect–I just got my period and I’m not pregnant”, instead of backing herself into a corner where she obviously can’t suddenly produce a pregnancy. By that point, she knew her sister had been fooling around with someone–didn’t it occur to her by that point that maybe, just maybe, the baby wasn’t her husband’s??? And then she TELLS him that she’s pregnant, and they suddenly announce it to, what appears to be, everyone.

I guess that’s why I’ll never be able to take over the life of my twin. I’d never be able to do fancy hair (half days, a ponytail is about all my hair gets from me), and I’m not willing to cop to a pregnancy that I don’t have.

If I had a twin, which I don’t, but that still doesn’t change the hair and pregnancy clause.

Hubby walked in on her having her I’m pregnant???!! phone spit-take with the doctor, which debagged that cat. One regular menstrual cycle for Bridget and she’s off the hook for that. The hair? That’d do me in too.

Was it just my wonky DVR or was the green screening on this show particularly dreadful?

Maybe she can fake a pregnancy for half a season, like whatsername on Glee.

The greenscreen was horrible,** Annie**. Not sure why they had that in there–they could have easily shown them to be out on a boat without the horrible “flying across the lake/wind in our hair/we’re using a greenscreen” effect.

Tonight was fun watching Bridget try and hide the body from last week. The long look she gave that circular saw was priceless.

I’m kind of curious why she wasn’t curious on how the body got in the trunk before it disappeared. When she left the loft it was in a tarp on the floor, right? I think I would have been freaking at that point. That’s why I wasn’t too surprised when it disappeared.

It’s starting to look like that despite her being an alcoholic, former stripper and prostitute, she’s a better person than her sister.

I saw her pull the hitman’s picture out of his pocket, but perhaps my DVR cut out after that. I didn’t put it together until they showed Siobhan trying to withdraw her money in Paris.
They kind of lost me there. It’s a big leap of faith for Siobhan to assume that if she disappears from the boat that Bridget will just assume her life. I think I’d rather go back home as a witness then try and trick everyone into thinking I’m my twin sister. Especially since if I get caught it’s going to look like I killed her.
ISTM it would have made more sense for for Siobhan to have the hitman ready on the pier for Bridget when she came back alone or to have just shot/OD’d Bridget right there on the boat (and set up to look like an angry spouse murdered her for cheating) instead of giving her a few days to interact with high society. Especially since it was pretty likely that Bridget would get shitfaced around all that liquor and champagne much quicker the Siobhan would, and possibly start talking…what a convenient time for her to get cleaned up.

ETA, another vote for the greenscreen from the pilot being awful, it was almost embarrassing for them. I’ve seeing better boating greenscreens on SNL and MadTV. The only thing they could have done to make it worse was toss a bucket of water on them or accidentally bumped the camera.
