Bug report

Using XP Windows with IE6 on a public computer.

  1. Open two windows of separate threads of SDMB.
  2. Log in on window 1.
  3. Reply to a thread.
  4. Open window 2 which is not logged in.
  5. Type reply.
  6. SDMB asks for log in information

Why doesn’t SDMB check for cookie?

  1. Log in on window 2
  2. SDMB asks which forum you want.

There goes your reply!
Lost: all that time googling for cites and that witty riposte.

Why would you do this?

Well, for me I used to keep several windows opened to different threads because the SDMB tends to jam up a lot, and that way I can read threads sorta continuously while I wait to go back and forth on others, if that is what he is meaning and you asking…

According to my husband:

Each window has it’s own cookie session. Unless you open the second window from the first logged-in one, your sessions aren’t going to match and you’ll have to log in again from the second window. This is also true if you use a browser with tabbed browsing. Open thread #2 from window/tab #1 and you won’t have this problem.

It sounds like you’re not set up to be permanently logged in. If you are, then the boards should check a cookie every time you access them. That way, you can open multiple pages in multiple windows and still be logged in. If you are permanently logged in, then check your cookie settings in your brower’s options.

I hope that’s clear!

TubaDiva, I use more than one window for the reason given by Operation Ripper: bandwidth. I’ll have one window of a forum threads list, open all threads that interest me, and then read individual threads as they load. It’s kind of the way I have to do other business on these public computers. I’ll have a Google search window open for a (let’s say jukebox) part and then open many other windows from that search that look promishing. <Shift><Carriage Return> is my most used command.

mnemosyne, even given that, a cookie for each window, which I doubt given my use of <Shift><Carriage Return>, there still remains a problem. The problem is that if I write a quick reply, the window asks me to log in, then after I log in the window forgets not only which thread I logged in from but the reply itself.

Two Cases:

  1. Open a thread then log-in on that window. SDMB takes me back to that thread.

  2. Open a thread, write a quick reply, SDMB asks me to log-in then forgets which thread and the reply.
P.S. I am logged-in in this thread and still I’m asked to log in. Dang, another bug but I don’t have time to duplicate it. Time for a <CTRL><A> and <CTRL><C>, open another window then <CTRL><V>. Thank goodness I was able to back up to the advanced reply this was written in.

P.P.S. Preview post thinks I’m still logged-in.

As I understand it, the board checks for cookies when it first establishes the session. Thus, if you open window #1 to SDMB and log in, your cookie is stored on the computer. You can then open window #2 and not have to log in again.

However, if you open the second SDMB session before you have entered your login for the first one, Session 2 has already looked for the cookie and not found it, so it will ask you to log in.

Unless, of course, your public computer has cookies disabled, then you might have to keep logging in over and over again.
