I’m going to suggest that you be careful about packing the playlist with stuff from “Disney” movies that aren’t really Disney movies. As a teacher I used to play “Disney” songs from time to time when requested, using the same notion, and that rarely satisfied the teen girls, who were much more interested in hearing “Let It Go” for the umpteenth time.
Do NOT forget to include the Hercules love song “I Won’t Say (I’m in Love)”. Personally one of my all-time Disney favs, and one the teens in my classrooms loved.
If you want to show them what the 80s were all about, make sure to get a recording of Michael Bolton singing “A Dream Is a Wish”, from the video “Mad About the Mouse”. Bolton at his best.
Oh, these girls know what they’re getting into. They’re already into the ooga chaka from Hooked on A Feeling. But you’re absolutely correct that this is a well that can’t be hit too often.
I added several here. I can’t believe I missed ‘I Won’t Say I’m in Love’. That’s a great song.
Question: do songs that were written for Disney projects but rejected/left on the cutting room floor, or songs written for Disney projects that were themselves outright cancelled, count for consideration?
‘Cause, even aside from the songs I might suggest, there are a few gems to be found in the ol’ rejects bin.
Other, less-serious suggestion: use some non-Disney Idina Menzel songs. Like the dirty ones.
(Hey, my Dad was in the Marine Corps, and I grew up in the Ren and Stimpy era. Road trip singalongs were classy as all hell. :D)
Whatever you do, do not forget to include the best of the fairly-recent Disney songs.
I am referring, of course, to “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” from Mulan, sung by Donny Osmond of all people. Yes, I am 100% serious. It is freaking awesome.
“Do You Believe in Magic?” by the Loving Spoonful
“Bad to the Bone” by George Thorogood & the Destroyers
“Parents Just Don’t Understand” by DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince
