Our house is silent, for the most part. We have an electric furnace, so when the furnace kicks on one hears the air blowing, thats about it.
However, our house does have stories to tell. In 1964 much of the pacific northwest experienced flooding, and we were no exception. Our house had 5.5 feet of water in it. Amazingly, it didn’t do any permanent damage, but there are still subtle signs of the water. Inside the closets, which are lined with unpainted plywood, there are faint lines where the water crested. The house still has several of the original junction boxes, and if the cover plates are pulled of, there still is, today, a layer of silt in the bottom. It’s very weird.
Wow, Lancia; I didn’t know you live here in the Pac Northwest too.
As new as my house is, you’d think it would be quiet, but it really isn’t. I have gas heat and fresh air returns. When the system kicks on, you can hear it.
That wouldn’t be too bad, but what is really the noise maker in our house is the fish tank. It’s located in our entry way and I can always hear that thing gurgling away; especially if the water level becomes too low. We’ve really got break that damn thing down and clean it, but neither the hubby nor I seem to be real motivated.
Well, I have a typical Monday staring at me; crap going wrong, etc. I’ve been trying to fix them since I got here; still no luck. I’ve taken a deep sigh and must dig in again.
**CatDude **- glad the wedding went well. Sounds like you partied hard!!
**Taters **- our aquarium is mostly quiet, but when the water gets low, you know it. And when I’m having a toss-and-turn night, I definitely notice it. ugh
Load 3 in the washer, load 2 in the dryer, load one hanging in the respective closets. Lunch has been ingested. I need to scrape the loose gunk out of my oven so I can run the cleaning cycle tonight. It’ll stink bad enough as it is. I love having a self-cleaning oven, but I hate when it gets to where it *has *to be cleaned. I need a kitchen fairy…
I just spent a couple of hours looking at our budget, especially for the months since I retired. **FCD **and I need to discuss tonight. I know there are a bunch of unusual expenses - like the post-hurricane aquarium expenses and the basement rebuild expenses - but there are also a lot we need to control - like our eating out expenses - we do that way too often. Dammit. I like eating out, but we can’t afford to do it as often as we do. I’m also thinking… again… that we need to get rid of the boat. We’ve taken it out exactly one time this year. And when you figure what we spent for the slip, insurance, and maintenance, it came to something like $2000/hour. Time to let it go. If I can convince the co-owner that it’s the right thing to do. <sigh>
That is about to implode. Seriously. One of the annoyances of living in a lob cabin is the constant cracking of wood that’s always expanding and contracting. Every once in a while a crack will be so loud that I expect the roof to fall on me.
I have a major conundrum. Rite Aid had Emerald Cocoa Roasted Almonds on sale (buy 1 get 1 free). They are heavenly but they have a major problem. They squeak. I have a lifelong aversion to squeaky food. I don’t know if I can overcome it enough to eat 2 jars. I’m gonna try like hell though because they’re really good.
Just got back from Sweetie’s doctor’s appointment. He needed me to drive because he has a bad head cold. They want to do a whole lot of blood tests to try to figure out why he has clotting problems but they can’t do it as long as he’s on warfarin. So, as of today, he’s off the warfarin and on the aspirin for 3 weeks.
One hour until my doctor’s appointment. Gonna find out how much longer I need the fungus cream. It’s looking a whole lot better.
My nutrition professor finally replied to my research paper topic - a week after I sent it in. Thanks lady. Now I only have a week and a half to do it, along with midterms and all my regular homework. This is, of course, the “optional” research paper that isn’t really optional. That was a typo but she didn’t see a reason to tell us this until someone specifically asked about it. I could have done the damn thing a month ago but thought it was optional. I don’t need the extra credit so I wasn’t gonna do it. Grumble.
Glad I didn’t do my history midterm yet. Prof sent out an announcement today telling those that did do it to take advantage of their second attempt. Said that he gave us 3 hours to answer 4 essay questions for a reason. Answers should be well thought out and containing examples and details.
Thanks to my nutrition professor and her damn research paper, I’m now behind in life so I need to get back to work. Ugh. No rest for the weary.
We bought our house from the son of the original owner. Mrs. Evens died in the house at age 94. We used the ascribe every odd noise to her. She’s been pretty quiet the last few years, so I guess she thinks we’re ok.
Taters, years ago I had an aquarium in my bedroom. I was working in an adult trauma unit at the time. Almost every night I dreamed I had chest tubes. I finally moved it to a room where I couldn’t hear it at night. Much better.
Our house was built in 1895, or 1897, the city and the county disagree on that point, so it says a lot. Mostly what it says is “something else is broken and needs to be fixed/replaced.”
Our furnace is just on the other side of the wall from our bed, and when the fan came on it was really loud. When the fan started to screech, (bad bearing), we opted to get a whole new furnace with a different type of blower.
ShortDrum, aspirin is a blood thinner, so it might have an effect on your sweetie’s clotting ability, I think. I take a lot of aspirin and I don’t clot as well as I used to.
On the other hand, i may not know what I’m talking about.
Afternoon all. Our new house in OKCis for the most part quiet however occasionally there will be loud cracks. Oh well it is a rental so I am not to concerned The only other noise is generally LibbyCat behaving like a pet elephant at 3AM like she did this morning.
Work is being really trying at the moment as I am trying not to kill anyone.
On the good side we should close on the house sale by Nov 19th! Yay!
My house was built in 1984 so it’s pretty much noise-free, with the exception of the built in ice maker in the fridge. I don’t hear during the day, but in the evening when everything is quiet the whump of a fresh load of ice makes me jump every time.
Pumpkin carving and bedroom painting is on the agenda this week. Daughter#2 just picked up the son. I was under the impression that this was to be a day visit, but when she arrived she told him that she wanted to keep him for a week. All things taken into consideration, it’s probably a good thing.
I need another cup of WTHU, then I shall shower and commence purtification.
My house is pretty settled. It was built circa 1927 and has no right angles left. The furnace goes whomp in the winter when it first kicks in. Otherwise, it’s well-behaved and quiet.
However, our office kitchen had a disaster over the weekend. The water filter leaked all weekend, so the entire kitchen and server room flooded. We don’t have any water in the kitchen, so there was no coffee. An emergency coffee run was made to Starbucks.
The ice maker, HEE! Last Thursday mornin’ after I had just gotten up and was in the kitchen makin’ coffee, the ice maker decided to dump. I about jumped outta my skin. That thing is loud when nuttin’ else is makin’ noise at 5:15 A.M.
Howdy Y’all! Sneakin’ in a post from irk just cause I needed a little break and decided to catch up on the MMP.
My condo is, in and of itself, pretty noise-free. I’ve gotten used to the water heater and freezer making their “going through the motions” cycle. The furnace clicks right before it comes on. I guess it’s giving me notice. The noise that is the noisiest is the hum of the automatic lamp turner on-er. Yeah, the timer.
I can’t stand a totally quiet house though. I have to sleep with a fan going for white noise.
In other news, it’s a nice day despite the thunderboomers late last night. The sun is out. I’m going to yoga class after irk, then home. Don’t know exactly what din-din will be, but I have to make 5 cup salad for an irk party tomorrow, and that involves tiny marshmallows and maraschino cherries. One for the salad, 1 in my mouth. One for the salad, 1 in my mouth.
The loudest things in my house are the refrigerator and the chest freezer. The chest freezer buzzes in a most annoying way, and I can hear the fridge when it fills up the icemaker with water. At least that’s what it sounds like. And of course the icemaker is loud.
The central air compressor is right outside the wall behind our heads in the bedroom, but it doesn’t bother me much. I need white noise to sleep, and have the celing fan on year-round.
[QUOTE=Bumbazine;14389912 ShortDrum, aspirin is a blood thinner, so it might have an effect on your sweetie’s clotting ability, I think. I take a lot of aspirin and I don’t clot as well as I used to.

That’s the hope. His clotting problem is that he clots too much and they don’t know why. He just randomly developed a pulmonary embolism and for the last year they’ve been upping his blood thinner level every 4 or 5 months or so.
I’m actually trying to research 2 reports that are blood thinner related. My psych paper is in depth research on warfarin’s history. The nutrition paper is an explanation for the dietary restrictions for blood thinner patients. Unfortunately, all my other homework is getting in the way. I was hoping to find a book called Living with Coumadin or something like that but I can’t find one. Of course there are all kinds of books about living with diabetes and living with depression but I don’t need those.
Found new hair elastic thingies. They’re thick rubbery things that look like gummy lifesavers. They stretch and shrink based on how much hair they need to hold so you don’t have to twist and pull hair through multiple times. They’re really cool and seem to work very well so far. My hair is really thick but tends to slide right through normal elastics and scrunchies. So far it hasn’t budged.
Update on the fungus is that it’s looking good. I don’t have to use the antifungal any more after today but the area is very dry so she wants me to use a good moisturizing cream twice a day for 6 weeks. If the color of my skin hasn’t returned to normal by then, she’s gonna do a biopsy to make sure there’s nothing still going on. But, the lab confirmed it was ringworm and I’ve been good about using my cream so I should be ok.
Sweetie just yelled at me. He caught me using my scissors to scratch my back. Oops.
Gotta call the firewood guy to get a delivery later this week. Gotta call the chimney sweep people too. Bought my voice recorder today, finally. Gotta get good at using it before January.
Oh well. Back to the homework. One benefit to spending over 2 hours sitting in waiting rooms in one day is that it’s very conducive for homework reading.
Depending on where you are, a two year spread of opinion on a house that’s over 110 years old is pretty good. In San Francisco, it’s really, really hard to document anything built before the quake in 1906 as all the official records were burned.
That reminds me of another house in San Francisco that we were in for a while. IIRC, it was built in 1911, and despite its age, it was structurally quiet. The electrical system, however… The breaker panel was a Federal Pacific, which is well known to be really bad quality stuff deserving to be destroyed and replaced on sight. You could judge the overall electric use in the house by whether the panel was humming or buzzing.
Boy do I have a list of questions for the surgeon… I’ve seen claims of being able to go back to sedentary work (such as what I do) in a week or so, and I’ve seen people saying that they were unable to go to work for two or three months. Fortunately, I can work from home 100% on a temporary basis if needed, so whether or not I can drive, won’t be a significant issue.
I also need to find out if I’ll ever be able to ride rollercoasters again. I’m hoping that will be a “Once the bones have completely knitted and healed.” It will really suck if I can never ride one again.
Home from irk. YAY!!! Dindin is leftovers from yestiddy. Tomorrow I do better. Chikin fried steak. YUM!!! Soon as OYKW shows up nukin’ will commence. I hope soon. I’s hongry!
We just finished a yummerrific shepherd’s pie, slightly modified. I added mushrooms, and topped the N.O.T. with shredded cheddar. Very yum and 3 servings left over - I see good lunches this week!
**Gotti **- when my sweetie got that procedure done, I think he was back to work within 4 or 6 weeks - driving was the issue. He was feeling pretty ragged for most of the first week, but after that, it was just a matter of avoiding being in cars as much as possible, wearing a collar when in the car, and generally being careful of the neck. I think he worked from home while recovering - in fact, I’d bet big money on it - he’s always working at home…
I had the last of the hard cider with supper. I’m feeling drowsy now - too early… knitting should be interesting.
We are having spaggetti. I never allow myself to have spaggetti, so I’m looking forward to that.
The property manager that needs to do his job before we will know if we can open our deli or not, called in sick today. It has been six weeks since we signed the lease and we’re still on hold.
