The Unofficial Start of Summer MMP

Happy Memorial Day! Feel free to wear white. Fire up the grill! Dive in the pool! Don’t forget the sunblock…

As far as I’m concerned, at least when I was a kid, summer didn’t start till school was out, and around here, school is still in session a while longer. But all the folks on the news are calling it the start of summer and it’s been a few years since I was a kid, so what the heck!

Hang a hammock between a couple of trees, grab yourself a lemonade and a good book, maybe put some good tunes on the radio (or iPod, if you must… :stuck_out_tongue: ) Let’s have a good summer!

The school district in my town is having exactly one more day after Memorial day. My mom, who works in special education, is hoping the parents will not bother bringing the kids in, so the teacher and techs can just get everything put away for summer, and not have to go back in Wednesday.

But, of course, no one can officially tell the students to stay home…

My daughter teaches in Virginia - her last day is June 17 (I think) and they’ve got 2 half days, a field day, and possibly a field trip, so that leaves her maybe 5 days to “teach.” They’ve taken their standardized tests and she’s covered all the material in the 5th grade science curriculum, so she’s just looking for fun “experiments” for the kids to do to fill those last days.

I suggested catapults and water balloons, but apparently it’s too hard to pick up bits of busted balloon… So they’re going to throw eggs instead.

It’s actually an experiment I did in the 9th grade. We had to take a raw egg and package it however we wanted so that it would survive being thrown down a rather steep hill at the school. Your grade was based on the amount of crackage or breakage. If your shell was uncracked and the yolk was unbroken, you got an A! I used popcorn - real popcorn, not the fakey foam packing stuff which probably didn’t exist in 1969. I got my A. And a snack. Anyway, she’s going to have her kids pack the eggs and drop them from the top of the bleachers, since they have no hills. No grades - just some fun with shock absorption.

Then my daughter will have to empty her classroom of the living stuff - the turtle, the saltwater fish, and the fresh water fish…

As for me, no vacation this year. Again. :frowning:

My mom would more or less encourage us to take a ‘mental health day’ that day. What’s the point of going in? You’ve already done everything.

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffienatin’. Happy Memorial Day and start of Summer!

It promises to be another rainy day here. That’s ok. It’s much needed right now.

We’re gonna go grab some brekkies in a bit just cause and then, well, nuttin’ else planned really. That’s a good day, right?

ShinyCat the cat in the hat could be thinkin’, “Don’t I look cool in this hat!” or, “Ima kill you in your sleep for this.” The expression looks like it could go either way.

I’m getting a day off this week, if I’m lucky.

kitty, I like the cat in the hat.

FCM, we did the egg drop thing in high school. Mine was a L’Eggs egg(remember those? )with a parachute attached. The egg survived.

This week is half-term holiday for the local schools, they don’t finish for summer until July sometime. Today’s a bank holiday here so no work for me, and then four days of quiet-ish trains without having to fight through the hordes of schoolies at the station.

It’s cloudy and dull here, not particularly cold but not great summery weather either. I have done absolutely nothing so far apart from faff on t’intwerwebz, feed the cats and put some more bread in the bird feeder.

I have no plans to do anything else today either apart from read stuff on here, watch crap telly and do a bit of cooking. That’s acceptable for a holiday, right?

Oh, and I booked flights to go to Hungary in July for a week to visit our friends. Woot!

Happy birthday, Wile E!

I’m up.

Another cold, rainy day here. At this point, I’d like freakin’ spring to arrive, please.

School doesn’t let out until some time around the third week of June here.

No real big plans today. I’ve got to clean my carpets. Sick dogs and carpets don’t go together.

That’s all I’ve got for now. I haven’t had my coffee yet.

Hello. We are just getting over a heat wave, though today is nice - mild, breezy, blue skies and sunshine, and NO japanese beetles infesting the garden yet. I despise heat and humidity and am not very happy in the summer, but I have a routine where I’m up at the crack of dawn when it’s coolest. Open all windows. Do my cleaning, cooking, laundry (I have the time since I’m not working). By 10 a.m. the temperature is the same inside and out, so I close the windows, draw the blinds, and go about my day. I have a Vornado fan that follows me around in the house and it keeps me tolerably cool except during the hottest part of the day, from 4 p.m. till 7 p.m. (I’ll have opened the windows by then!). My berry bushes in the garden have exploded and are taking over the yard - I may have to set up a roadside stand, lol! Happy summer to those who enjoy it!

The weather has been up and down around here - almost June and I still had to wear a cardigan to work today! But I like the cooler weather anyway - heat kills me.

Just paid my taxes. :frowning: I suppose I should count myself lucky that I only get 3.3% taken off my salary every month - a couple hundred more a year isn’t too bad.

All brekkied now. I know y’all were worried.

And now this…

Happy Birthday, Wile!

Caffienation in progress…

Well, this is fun. The weather is much cooler today. I woke up about 7:30, surfed around a bit and then…the power went out.

The power company is parked outside my neighbor’s house, and, in the meantime, I’ve taken refuge at Panera. It wasn’t supposed to start raining until late morning, but we had some major storms starting just after I woke up. There wasn’t that much thunder and none of it sounded like it was nearby, but still, power outage.

Of course, all the indoor things I wanted to do today are power users - laundry, vacuuming and shredding, just for 3.

So, I guess I’ll get my laundry all sorted and ready to go and maybe mop floors if power isn’t back by the time I’m done caffeinating.

Happy Birthday, Wile E!

Back later…

Still getting all my coffee input. Happy Mem day to all.

Due to schedules and vacation time, I took some extra days and made this a 5-day vacation. Original plan was to camp at a state park, but mechanical problems with the RV canceled that. Just hanging around the house and spending some time out on the boat. MizPullin and I originally planned an early-riser waterski trip, but it somehow fizzled out. Might get out later this afternoon (after the lake-partiers all head home). Covered a few chores, got a few more to do. but mainly spent the holiday lazing on the boat, sampling various cervesas.

I remember doing the drop-the-egg thing; it was fun! Mine had a parachute. I don’t know if it helped, but my egg survived.

Happy birthday Wile E!

pullin sampling various cervezas is always an appropriate holiday past time.

We have a weddin’ to go to a week from this comin’ Sattidy. OYKW can’t fit into his good suit. I can fit into mine however. Thus I am bein’ whined at to go suit shoppin’ with him. I don’t wanna! However, I’m bein’ threatened with sad puppy dawg eyes if I don’t. Thus, I suppose I shall get presentable to be seen in public and go with him to the shudder mawl shudder.

My life is so hard!

Could be worse, Swampy. You could have to clean the carpet where the dog got sick, like me. On the whole, the mall sounds better.

We didn’t go out on the boat after all. **FCD **is still pretty exhausted after working on the boat in the heat yesterday. So we’re hiding in the a/c. He’s working on something for work, and I’m thinking about running down to the grocery store for a coupla things. Daughter is cleaning her apartment.

I checked on the clay I was working yesterday, and the cat’s head cracked, so that’s one piece down. Luckily, the fish is drying well, as are the little fishies. I’m going to make a little fishie mobile/wind chime. I think I’m going to do the craft show again this year in Sept, so I need to get some new stock going.

Happy Memorial Day! and

Happy Birthday, Wile E!!!

Quiet day today. I’ve been to to grocery store, and we’re watching SyFy - Stepehn King stuff!!!

Ribs are on the grill, and later I’m making baked Vidalia onions, cole slaw and Bush’s Grillin’ Beans.

Also, thanks to all the veterans and current military for their service.

LOL (a bit lame, I’ll admit but I’m not feeling creative today)

this one is less lame, but it’s not your kitteh
