my house was built in 1910
but the most usual bumps in the night are my younger kitties playing World! Wide! Wrestling! which occasionally ends with both cats trompling both me and spouse to get away…
I have no idea how old my house is… It’s Victorian, but I can’t do better than that.
I can certainly sympathise with the fire alarms though- ours just went off in the middle of me typing the word ‘fire alarms’ then, it’s that oversensitive- we have 3 flats in the house, and they have a shared alarm system, that occasionally goes off totally at random; it’s claimed there’s a fire in my bedroom at 6am when I was in bed before now. There wasn’t.
The house itself is quiet, all the noise is from the inhabitants, both human and mousey. My parents old house used to creak and groan half the night, but it was far out in the country, so apart from the odd distant cow, it was much quieter than this place, on a main road!
Having a lot of trouble getting out of bed at the moment, I’m barely seeing the morning before it’s over. I don’t think the cold wet is helping. Had the first frosts already, but just light ones. I’m almost ready to retire the sandals for the winter. Almost.
I’m trying damn hard to overdose on cinnamon and cocoa almonds. They’re addictive. The cinnamon ones don’t squeak as badly as the cocoa ones.
Sweetie has decided to stay home again today. He spent most of his two days off being sick so he thinks he deserves another day off. Can’t say I blame him. With 3 shows and a regular day this week, he’s gonna get 45 hours in 4 days so why not take a day off? Unfortunately this means I’ll be fighting the allure of trick or treating on city of heroes all day. I HAVE TO BE STRONG!!! Homework must come first!!!
mmmmmmmm…almondssssssssss…

Went to the doctor yesterday for the insomnia. She prescribed ambien - 12 of them. My next appointment is Nov. 30.
I hate doctors.
My house is haunted; most noises we just blame on “the Lady” - including footsteps down the hall.
Fall has brought out the posts selling almendras garrapiñadas, an almond concoction whose English name I should know since they’re made in Scotland too but can’t for the life of me remember.
I shouldn’t eat any but I waaaaaaannnaaaaaaa! They’re relatively hard to find in Navarra, when I was little being able to get some for Christmas was one of the high points of spending Christmas in Barcelona.
In further extremely-important news, it’s 38 minutes till quit o’clock and I’ve been able to chase down several customers of the “won’t respond to say that the solution to their problem has worked” and thus been able to close their tickets. Old age and experience have greatly increased my ability at politely making it clear that I intend to keep asking until I get a response damnit! - the key word being “politely”.
We used the super amazing locally-raised pork chops to make a pork-and-brussels sprout stir fry last night. It was good. Although KT thought there might be better ways to cook them (e.g. grill them whole instead of cutting and sauteing), it was still the best pork I’ve ever had in a stir fry.
Tonight’s leftovers. We have an overwhelming amount and variety of leftovers: kale and butternut squash gnocchi, pear and parsnip bisque (bleh), beef-n-bean tacos, duck, salad, and pork stir fry. It’s only down to this because KT finished the pumpkin stuffed shells yesterday. I’ve been on a cooking binge.
ryobserver, our smoke detector started chirping during the night a week or so ago. It was only 1 and not near the bedroom so we were able to sleep through it and fix it in the morning, but it terrorized the cat.
Rosie, have you tried a fake-sun lamp, aka a happy light? I’m just starting to use one, and it might be working. I’m a little less tired, grumpy, unmotivated, and generally out of sorts than I was last week.

Then again, the nice thing about weather like this is no need for ac or heat. This makes Jawja Power sad.

We’ve been doing our best to disappoint Duke Power and Piedmont Gas as well. During Faire season, about the only power consumed in our house on weekends is clocks and the pilot lights in the water heater and fireplace.
We’re having some significant possession issues with the dogs. If we give both dogs a chew stick, the older dog will take it from the puppy, then it’s WAR. So far, all we’ve been able to do to not have barking, growling and biting is to physically separate the two. How do we teach sharing, or at least “leave his bone alone” to a nearly 10 year old dog who’s been the one and only dog of the house?
Back from class, covered in clay, and rather pleased overall.
I finished the two pieces I made last week, so they’re on the shelf to dry. Then I threw 2 large bowls - one flatter and one deeper. Rather pleased with both.
I also got 3 pieces back from glazing. The vase came out pretty nice, the yarn bowl needs to have some glaze overrun trimmed out of the yarn slot, and the bowl, besides being so heavy, ended up way darker than I expected, so the bunch of grapes I decorated it with pretty much faded into the gloom. Plus something fell inside the bowl, leaving me with a stupid white lump that really stands out. Oh well - I’m sure I can make something of it - maybe a mini birdbath? I’ll post pics in a bit.
I stopped at the Amish market at the library and got a small head of cabbage and some green beans. We’ll have them with a ham steak for supper tonight.
It’s lovely out today, if a tad cool. I turned off the furnace and opened the house for some fresh air. Trying to decide whether to work outside for a while, work in my studio, clean up the kitchen, or take a nap… decisions, decisions.
Speaking of power, our electric usage last month was only 2/3 of what it was this time last year. Unfortunately, due to rates going up, the bill was probably more. Oh well, what ya gonna do?
**gotti **- good luck teaching puppehs to share. Especially if each thinks he’s the alpha. Dogs can be worse than kids sometimes.
HAPPY LIGHT!!! My mom recently gave me a happy light! I like it when I’m working because my house is so dark and never lets in any direct sunlight. It really does seem to make a difference in my mood. I’ve also been using it at night, next to my bed, in an attempt to make my body think I’m sleeping during the day. I don’t know if it’s a coincidence or not but I have been sleeping from about midnight til 9 or 10 the last few nights, instead of between 5 and 2pm.
I’ll look into the happy light thing. I’d told my psy-doc that I was back sliding, but he didn’t want to change my meds - maybe I should change psy-docs . . .
Howdy from irk! Sneakin’ in a post just cause. I really wanna go home but can’t. Poor Me!
Oh well, back to irk.
Laterz!
Rosie, KT did some research on the happy lights, and, from what he said (I didn’t read up on it.), you don’t need to buy an actual happy light. You just need a full spectrum bulb, and it needs to be really close to you (I don’t remember exactly how close, but something like 18".) at a downward angle. You need at least 15 minutes exposure to that a day, preferably in the morning to help with circadian rhythms, i.e. to make your body think that the sun is up and shining brightly. That’s what I’m trying, but it’s only been a few days so I really don’t have results to report.
We’re having our Halloween party at work this afternoon. People are already hyper and the sugar-fest hasn’t even started yet. Once the booze starts flowing, it will get really crazy. I’m hoping for good pictures for the album.
Done with work, off to school. I have a problem, however.
Coffee at the bookstore: crappy but cheap.
Coffee in the cafeteria: better but costs more.
Decisions.
I swear I thought that this said bedboobies the first five times that I read it. :p:D
That’s how it is here. When something strange happens we always attribute it to my grandfather who passed away in the basement.
So, I’m sure some of you remember my sweet schnoodle, Bubba. Well, unfortunately he’s been sick since Saturday when I came home from a show. We’ve now been to the vet four times including having him stay overnight at the emergency vet last night. I’m hopeful that he’ll be ok and able to keep food down tomorrow. If not, he’s going to have to be kept for several days for treatment of pancreatitis and given an iv and all sorts of fun stuff.
Just when I think things are going to get better, they don’t.
Lotta crap going on here right now. I’m going to have to put my foot down tomorrow because the ship’s sailed on that today.
I think bedboobies are the best kind…
And on top of everything else, Detailed AGM and Big Boss just called me to warn me that the corporate inspector is in town and will be inspecting us tomorrow. This inspection, unlike the last ones, will require delicate juggling to deal with the fact that we’re sold out tonight. :smack::smack::smack::smack::smack::smack::smack::smack::smack:
And I had such high hopes for today.
Hi Pie! Haven’t seen you in a while. (Maybe I missed you late last week if you were here then.) Sorry to hear about Bubba.
