Bus Crash Of Junior Hockey Players in Saskatchewan - Fatalities Confirmed [in 2018]

A bus carrying a Junior Hockey League team to a playoff game in East-Central Saskatchewan was T-boned by a semi today.

The Mounties have confirmed fatalities and injuries. Rumours say as many as 15 dead.

Witnesses say a crane has been needed to move the remains of the bus. Air ambulances have been carrying injured to hospitals.

Junior Hockey League teams have players ranging from 16 to 21, from anywhere in Canada or the States.

Tweets of sympathy and condolences from Prime Minister Trudeau, Premier Moe of Saskatchewan, and Premier Notley of Alberta.

Parents and grand-parents of the players are gathering in a local church in Nipawin, waiting for news …

My heart goes out to them.
“You are in Saskatchewan’s hearts”: Deaths confirmed in Junior Hockey team bus crash.

Team had guys from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba on it. Parents from all three provinces are making some very long drives tonight, not knowing …

My thoughts are with the team and the parents, Jesus, that’s tragic. I hope there are many survivors.

Now confirmed: 14 dead; 14 in hospital, three with injuries described as serious. One player in hospital spoke with parents and said he can’t feel his lower extremities.

24 on the team, plus coaches and driver; maybe 30 on the team bus, plus the driver of the semi. Pretty high casualty rate.

It’s a terrible thing. The whole country is watching.

Such sad news. I am curious to see the investigation plays out.

The coach is one of the dead.

Sad news for sure. Hockey is like a religion up there.

One of the ER doctors posted it was one of the worst nights of his life. Telling parents that their son was “only” seriously injured and seeing their faces light up.

This is just breaking my heart, I cannot even fathom how the families, team, league and town are coping. Has there been any preliminary information on the cause?

Everyone I speak too seems truly gutted by this story.

So many beautiful young people from one small community, is just heartbreaking.

Listening right now to a media conference. The Assistant Commissioner for F Division of the RCMP said that the investigation is ongoing. They are examining all issues: road conditions, weather, vehicles. The driver of the semi, who was not injured, was detained for questioning and subsequently released.

Investigation will take some time. The A/C said that last night there were approximately 50 Mounties on site carrying out the investigation and aiding the EMT.

Mounties have confirmed that there were 29 on the bus last night. All were either injured or killed.

It’s a tragedy of appalling magnitude to hit such a small community. When I first saw this thread I thought it was rehashing some old news from years ago – I had not yet heard that this had happened. It’s really heartbreaking in so many ways.

Instead of what was supposed to be Game 6, tomorrow night there will be a vigil at the rink in Humboldt.
