Bush quote about reluctance to use gay rights as a wedge issue?

I have this dim memory of once having read a description of an upset conversation George W. Bush had had with a confidante about his campaign managers or advisors or some such thing, perhaps even before he was president yet, where he was being prodded to cynically exploit anti-gay sentiments to stir up votes, but was reluctant to go along, complaining with something along the lines “They want me to beat up on gay people. I won’t do that”. But I can’t remember the exact quote or situation or anything and am having great trouble finding a description of whatever it was. Anyone have any idea what I might be thinking of?

Incidentally, I’m not thinking of the recently revealed business about “I’m not going to tell some gay kid in the audience that he can’t get married.” It was reading about that which jogged my memory of whatever previous thing I’d heard about.

One small bump to put this in the daytime…

oops, nevermind. but it rings a bell.

You may be thinking of a conversation Bush was said to have had with James Robinson, who was at one time the leader of the Southern Baptist Convention. According to Doug Wead, who was an adviser to Bush, Bush had told Robinson:

Yes, I think that must be it. Thanks!
