You know, I am reluctant to give Trump the benefit of the doubt about anything, but is it possible that tried to say something along the lines of, “He knowingly signed up for a difficult and dangerous job, and we honor his heroism.” And it came out as, “He knew what he signed up for.”
I can easily believe that Trump was undiplomatic, but well intentioned in this case.
I can’t believe I said that, and it should not be taken to indicate that I believe that Trump is in general well intentioned.
There’s nothing subtle about Trump.
Even if he was trying to be diplomatic, he’s had no practice and his real thoughts take over.

True, I am just concerned that when you jump him for something that is unsubtle but possibly not evil, it dilutes the impact of his real evil. Like just about everything he has said about Puerto Rico.

It honestly does not matter one iota what he intended to do, because he did not do that. There is no defense, there is no “eh, close enough…,” there is no “well, I’m pretty sure he meant to say…”
