It’s not hilarious; this is deadly serious stuff we’re talking about. A president who still has about 45-50% of the population willing to say he’s doing a good enough job, who’s approval rating actually got higher as he was getting worked by Putin on live TV, is now basically laying out the next conspiracy theory. And it’s the mother of them all.
You need to understand the gravity of this. This week has been unprecedented in American history. All of the signs point to an ailing democracy, a democracy that’s ailing so badly that even a Democratic win at the ballot box could end up being a loss officially, and if not that, it could be a contested election
As reported on Rachel Maddow, the question about whether Godfather Vlad preferred Trump was removed from the official WH transcript of the Helsinki press conference. The article suggests this might have been inadvertent, but Maddow played the official video and the question had been removed there as well, so it seems to have been deliberate. (The Russian transcript, BTW, omits the exchange entirely.)
As seems to happen more and more of late, Mr Eric Blair has a prescient commentary on these times:
I seem to have a defective memory. Room 101 awaits.…
I think this is possible but not for the ostensible reason the CFSG “thinks”. It’s possible that Russia will attempt to interfere in election in favor of the Democrats – blatantly, egregiously, and deliberately incompetently. Like, actually trying to change votes on systems in a way that won’t work but which can be traced back to Russia fairly easily. That would accomplish the dual purpose of hurting faith in American democracy while still helping their bitch in chief due to the blowback against manufactured apparent Democratic “collusion”.
I find this absolutely horrifying, and am amazed that it’s not getting more attention. (Admittedly Maddow did try to devote an entire show to it, but then got blindsided by the release of the Trump/Cohen tape.)
It has to be annoying to any would-be dictator to come into office and find a whole slew of provisions and procedures devoted to making government accountable and transparent. Poor things, having to go to the trouble of sweeping all that away!
After said visitors have paid a hefty entrance fee, of course. I mean, the egress is quite rare, so the privilege of seeing one should carry a commensurate price tag.
Apparently there was a fee dispute between Mueller and one of Trump’s golf courses years ago. Mueller simply dropped his membership.
Also, Mueller left employment from the law firm that represents Jared Kushner to take the job as Special Counsel. Obviously Kushner’s lawyer is a different lawyer in that firm than Mueller.
Lastly, Trump claims that Mueller was butt hurt because Trump interviewed Mueller for the FBI position to replace Comey and was disappointed when he wasn’t picked. What Trump never mentions is that Mueller only interviewed for the job at Trump’s invitation. He was not actively seeking the Director’s job again after having held it for 12 years.
Mueller ran all these concerns past the DOJ ethics folks before accepting his position. According to DOJ, none of the issues rose to the level of being an actual conflict of interest.
Trump’s legal team could also ask a judge for a formal legal determination of conflict of interest. You’ll notice they’ve never done that.
This is all about sowing doubt about the integrity of Mueller’s investigation, and nothing else.
