Even the usually infuriatingly over-cautious NPR took Trump to task, opening their report by flatly calling Lewis a “civil rights hero” and giving an overview of Lewis’s record, including the small matter of his having his goddamned skull fractured in Selma.

Going after John Lewis is a huge mistake. Maybe not for his base, who hate everyone who doesn’t look like them, but it will only solidify and unify those who will do everything they can to make this cocksucker rue the day he ran for office. Lewis may have been over the top in his criticism of Trump’s legitimacy as president, but Trump’s response was personal and hurtful, just like any 10-year-old bully’s.
Sadly, the same could be said about his attacking a heartbroken gold star family. I think this is just another WTF moment that will have little impact on the Tangerine Nightmare’s time in office.

I don’t think it was over the top. For one thing, Lewis didn’t make that statement for shock value or to get headlines. I believe he said it because that is truly what he believes.
In stark contrast with Trump, who has never made a sincere statement stemmiing from a deeply held belief, mainly because he has no core beliefs.
