I don’t understand. When Obama campaigned for Hillary, was his message “both of these people are equally awesome”?
Maybe not, but he didn’t slag the opponent either. Obama has also been very careful not to publicly criticize Trump either, even though he has voiced concern about his policies.

Trump has that rally in Ohio, tonight. (He’s onstage as I type.)
He doesn’t have much to say that will inspire cheers: the economy is generally still coasting along on the good decisions of the Obama Administration, but there are troubling rumblings of the upcoming fallout from Trump’s tariffs.
The Ohio crowd will have watched Trump defer to Putin in a most un-strongman fashion.
What on earth does he have to offer them???
