I actually took it as a ‘not my cup of tea but have at it’ post. I didn’t take it as snarky or dismissive in an offensive sort of way. As far as the Pit thread closing, I don’t think she intended to stifle discussion - that she just closed it because the original thread was reopened and figured there wasn’t anything left to discuss.
Obviously, many people’s MMV.
The thing is, discussion was still going on. If people weren’t interested in discussing it further, then the thread would have died off of its own accord. The fact that she closed it seemed to indicate to me that she knew people wanted to still discuss it, but she didn’t want to hear about it. Tacky to say the least to use thread-closing power in such a manner.
Ah, you’re just phoning it in now.
.
But it happens regularly.
Pit thread on troll gets going, troll gets banned, pit thread gets closed.
Pit thread on closed thread gets going, thread gets reopened, pit thread gets closed.
Where is the sinister motive here?
Once a troll gets banned, the policy is to close the thread, because it is considered not fair to discuss someone who is no longer here to defend themselves. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an example where such a closed thread was then discussed in a new thread, leading to the old thread being reopened. Can you point me to such an example?
Hell no. I wouldn’t even know where to start looking. But it’s only sensible; the thing being complained about no longer applies, so the complaint thread gets closed.
Here’s the difference…if a Pit thread was started to complain about a poster, and the poster gets banned, you are right…there’s nothing left to talk about.
But if a Pit thread is started to ask questions about why someone was banned, and the poster is then reinstated with no explanation for either the banning or the reinstatement, then there is legitimate reason for discussion…because the original question wasn’t resolved. Simply reversing the decision doesn’t necessarily resolve the question.
It was not a complaint thread, nor a petition to reopen thread. It was a thread making a question that got closed before there was an answer to that question.
What I think would be fair, is the bitchiest people in this thread having to moderate for a month. They can then get flamed for whatever they do, because you will never not piss off people. You’re doing good if you have less then ten people bitch you out in any thread, and shouldn’t worry about it. I think it safe to say dopers can be nit picking son’s of a gun, and like a pit bull in a death grip on a Chihuahua being shaking till the blood flies around.
I bet if we tried this, people would start Pit threads about them and they wouldn’t respond.
Because as soon as they would go to try on Giraffe’s jackboots, they’d tumble in and disappear.
(Or was that the idea?)
