The real question is: Cake or Death?
Cake please.
A consolidated post here - mine and my daughter’s! 
And Snermy, my Mom used to make that white boiled frosting too–it’s delicious, but she told me that it’s very hard to make and is equally hard to handle, because boiling sugar can burn quickly.
That would have to be -my- favorite birthday cake–a devil’s food cake with white boiled frosting. Believe me, it is delicious! Haven’t had it in years, though; usually I settle for the “normal” yellow cake with white frosting or chocolate frosting. And yes, we all love the roses here.
My daughter’s favorite cake is from a local bakery, Raulins, who makes a delicious yellow cake that they frost with some of the best vanilla icing ever! Her birthday (21st!) is in two weeks, so we’re gearing up for that. She also likes strawberry shortcake. Yes, not a “real” cake, but it’s one of her favorites.
My son likes the checkerboard cake! I haven’t been able to find a checkerboard cake pan, though, so what I’ve done for him the past couple of years was to make a black & white cake–that is, a sheet cake, one layer yellow, frosted with home-made buttercream chocolate and one layer devil’s food, frosted with home-made buttercream vanilla. Cakes are not from scratch but Duncan Hines mix, which I’ve found usually comes out fairly well.
Devil’s Food Chocolate Bundt Cake, with Double Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting drizzled on/over the Cake warm with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream, or Chocolate Chip Ice Cream on the side.

Black Forest Cake.
Pie is good too, Chocolate Silk, Cherry Pie with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream, Strawberry Pie with Whipped Cream.
I make good Desserts.
The best thing one could do for my birthday is to provide either:
A. German Chocolate cake with real black forest icing
or
B. An authentic, hand made Boston Cream Pie
So, will those be coming via FedEx or UPS? 
Store bought/bakery cakes are pretty but I don’t like the way they taste. I usually make my own.
My favorite is Banana (yellow cake with banana licquer<sp>) and chocolate frosting. If I want the cake all to myself, I’ll make raspberry with cream cheese frosting.
I’ll just go with 2.
