Cake vs. Pie

Oh man, you wanna go there? No one can beat me at a pie fight on the Commodore 64 version of Three Stooges!

But… but… but that was my pie.

:frowning:

Now I have no pie.

Fine. Bring pie, so that I can have the cake all to myself.

You’re very smart.

It’s more cake than pie to me, too. And Boston Cream Pie? That is totally cake (one of the few cakes I don’t like…)

Will you be changing your username to panpie3?

Cake cake cake cake cake cake cake.

There’s a lot more variety with pie than cake. After a while, all cake tastes the same.

Also, I’ve never had a non-desert cake.

(re)taps ITD on the shoulder. Erm… look behind you. Check out the infinite quantities of pie. Have one. No, have two, I insist. Now, here, have this custard pie.

Yeah, cheesecake is definitely a type of pie. There’s nothing cakey about it at all. It’s a custard cooked with a pastry crust or graham cracker crust. If you consider cheesecake to be a type of cake, then you have to consider pumpkin pie to be cake, as well. They’re pretty much the exact same recipe, with one having cream cheese, and the other having pumpkin puree.

(cleans glasses with finger-wiper action and thwacks custard to the ground).

I haven’t voted. I love cake but having really good cake is rare, usually it’s just okay, dry cake is always disappointing. I am leaning toward pie because of the many possible varieties and the cheesecake argument. But the really important question, and possible deciding factor for me, in which category does Tiramisu belong?

That’s a pudding with cake in the true english trifle sense.

Pie Crust is arguably shortnin’ cake.

Wikipedia does classify it as a cake. But maybe you could opt for pie, then get your fix with tiramisu ice cream.

Perhaps it could just be made in pie form, with a ladyfinger crust so that it could pass as pie? Hmm, I foresee a delicious experiment in my future.

Works for me! Mmmmm.

The pie category can also include non dessert pies such as chicken pot pie. Never heard of chicken pot cake.

Someone else can have that experiment.

Maybe, but there are rice cakes, potato cakes (latkes) and savory quick breads (pretty much a cake) plus, muffins (I would classify them as cake). All quite yummy.

The amount of anti-pie sentiment expressed on the SDMB has me appalled. Simply appalled. I hope you all come to your senses.

Now, I know I definitely made the wrong choice when I voted for cake. I only eat cake when it’s someone’s birthday, meanwhile I’ll have both pumpkin and apple plus a third kind for the holidays. Do I need to mention cheesecake again?

'zackly. Bad pie is very bad, and great pie is nirvana.

Bad cake is still perfectly edible while great cake is just great cake.

I bought a pie out of curiosity tonight. It LOOKED perfect. But it was $3. A whole pie. I had to know. And, as one might imagine, it was genuinely inedible. A gummy, chewy, off, too sweet nightmare masquerading as pie.

Bad cake is still cake. Like…Twinkies are pretty much bad cake. Still perfectly consumable.

Homemade pumpkin pie the Stoid Way:

less sugar
LOTS more spice
Very good crust that doesn’t get soggy
20 minutes before it’s done, top it with a mix of butter, sour cream, brown sugar and pecans

THEN drop some cream on top.

You will have a gastrointestinal orgasm on the spot.
