Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Which is actually a shame for me, because I’m not that fond of multiplayer competition. Coop is cool, but competition just bores me. It’s like people who like gambling in Vegas – its fun for them; for me its just tedious, even if I’m winning. Money (for me) isn’t fun per se, money is just money.

Right. In addition, not everyone wants to pay for Live either. But it’s hard to argue that you can get the entire experience without the online one.
I remember when I refused to play online on video games. Now, I look forward to it.

Are there enough people playing on the PS3 to have an SDMB clan?

Give me a few months and I’ll be back home to play it.

Just fine for the 6 year olds, I’m sure.

So, now that we’ve had time to dissect…how are we feeling?

I love this game. Much prefer it to Halo 3 - graphically better-looking, a single-player campaign that drew me in far more (Halo 3 didn’t feel like a massive change from earlier versions), and a reasonable multi-player campaign. It doesn’t quite match up with Halo 3 for MP - they really need better balancing to encourage the low-level casual gamers - but the range of perks and weapons keeps me coming back far more than Halo 3 did. I’ve just unlocked the P90 so have a new toy to play with (although am trying to work out whether to go for Double Tap or Overkill and combine it with the G36C - any suggestions?).

I love me some double tap. My favorite combination is the AK-47u with double tap. I only use overkill for my shotgun and sniper kits because at that point you can’t use double tap. If you use double tap, you may want bandolier, especially for the AK-47u because it eats ammo. Essentially, it’s double-tap and the extra damage perk for the second one.

I’m a fan of the G36C as well, though. Quality weapon.

Halo’s multiplayer is simply better, and I don’t think it’s even close. Call of Duty is still great fun and easy to get in and out of, whereas I feel that when I start playing Halo online, I’m there for a few hours.
By the way, if you’re having trouble getting kills, use the M-16 with the red dot and the rocket propelled grenades. Much kills.

Ah, thanks to a run of HQ games on the Shipment map I’m no longer having trouble - M60 and triple frags is quite handy here. I’m currently trying to get Marksman with every unlocked weapon (only need the sniper rifles and the MP5, Mini-Uzi and Skorpion). Current favourite is the silenced P90, but after a few experiments I’m no wiser on whether Double Tap or Stopping Power is better, so I think it’s time to return to the M16.

I’ve fluctuated between double-tap, stopping power and juggernaut. Right now juggernaut seems to be working pretty well for me.

I really cannot get the hang of the ACOG sight. I seem to do a lot better with the red dot sight.

That shipment map is terrible for my kills to deaths ratio, especially on a headquarters game.

I think the general consensus is that Stopping Power is the gold standard. Some make a reasonable case for Juggernaut but those two are about the only two perks for an infantry style class.

I don’t understand why people use this perk. Dropped guns are everywhere. Just choose a different perk and when you spawn switch to your pistol and pick something else up?

Yeah, I’ve found little use for Overkill as a perk.

I’m still not convinced with Stopping Power. I’m getting far more kills with Double Tap, even with weapons that already have a high rate of fire (M249 and P90) or weapons that are limited to bursts (M16). The silenced M16 with Double Tap is my default standard now - just beat my previous best to record a 20-kill streak today (yeah, yeah, I’m sure others can best that).

It does depend on the map, though. On a map like Shipment you need a spray-and-pray weapon, since there’s little time to take stock and pick shots - for that, I’d recommend the M249 or M60, with the Triple Frag perk (just lob them into the air and keep running and shooting). For something like Vacant (a map I hate almost as much as Bloc) an assault rifle is useful - something with enough of a rate of fire for room clearance, but capable of aiming shots for taking locations outside and for aiming into the big office. For the shipboard map (Wetwork?) a silenced weapon is a must, because people miss you a lot in the dark and rely on maps.

Most recently I’ve tried completing MP games with the best kill-to-death ratio, using a little patience and psychology. So far I’ve managed 18 kills and three assists for one death, but that’s been a one-off.

The build that I use for the Shipment map is a P90 with a red-dot site. I use the 3 frag grenades perk along with sonic boom and martyrdom. I usually do fairly well on that map. It is a terrible map for anything other than free for all or team death match. I was in a domination game on that map that lasted for well over 30 minutes. I did end up with over 200 kills and completed a lot of the challenges because of that though.

Flexibility. That’s why I take Overkill.

I hate playing a bunch of kids that have Juggernaut, Martyrdom, and 3 grenades. They’re like frickin’ meth-heads.

I did try Overkill with a shotgun and sniper rifle (with claymores to cover my back), but frankly I suck at sniping - I miss the peripheral vision. It’s the same reason I never use ACOG scopes as a perk - you lose that flicker of movement that could gain you a kill or lose you a life. Silenced M16 and some intelligent flanking is my preferred approach - if everyone’s going one way, go the other (the only dangers being an oppo spawn point behind you or someone on their team with the same idea). I’m amazed sometimes how rarely people use the killcam to track you down - as bad as it is, snipe point camping is sometimes quite easy.

Hey - I’m 38!

I’ll sometimes use Last Stand, but Martyrdom is good for a few cheap kills, and I usually get nailed by one or two a game myself (sometimes the range on those grenades seems pretty wide).

Those are probably where the victim has Sonic Boom as a perk.

You! You’re responsible for that?!?! Juggernaut is the worst perk. Oh, it’s effective, but it makes for unbalancing the hell out of weapons.

Then again, I’m a sadist that almost exclusively plays Oldcore.

I just earned the option of going into prestige mode. It apparently resets everything to 0. What’s the upside?

A nifty medal. Gold plated weapons.
I think that’s it.

I’m not a fan of the ranking system in this game. There’s no reward for skill. If you plug along through enough games, everything gets unlocked and accomplished.
