I played Medal of Honor and the Rainbow 6 games back around 2001-2003ish. I’d like to get in on Call of Duty now, but I haven’t played any of the series.
The current game is $60. Some of the older onces can be had used for quite a bit less. Where should I start?
(PS3)
THANKS!
If you’re at all interested in Band of Brothers, start with the first. The US campaign was based on their exploits.
My son is old enough to play now so what I am really after is a fun first person shooter we can play together. Actually not set on COD. BOB could work too.
Actually - I am open to any first person shooter type game we could play together.
I think you misunderstood. The US campaign in the first COD is basically Band of Brothers: The Game.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a very good game. Although short, the single player story is good.
Oh yeah, I want to play offline.
I quite enjoyed COD 2. I got 3 which was alright, then Black Ops which was pretty naff. World at War was alright too but by then it’s lost its roots.
newcrasher, you’re looking for FPS games with splitscreen co-operative right? Both CoD: Modern Warfare 2 & 3 have such modes (Spec-Ops, and Survival in 3), I can’t speak to the other series (the original line, or Black Ops) though. They’re a lot of fun, I play them with my Brother in Law since he won’t get a gaming PC or Xbox Live.
Missed the edit window:
According to wikipedia, CoD 1-3 and Modern Warfare 1 had no splitscreen co-operative play, whereas World at War and the Black Ops games seem to only have the Zombie survival mode for co-op.
As far as COD goes it depends on what type of gaming you are looking to do. Modern Warfare 2 has ~25-30 co-op vs cpu missions you can work on together, although they tend to only last 5-10 minutes each and can vary widely in quality and enjoyment, IME. I didn’t pick up modern warfare 3, so I couldn’t comment on their update to the idea, but I would guess it might be something similar.
Black Ops 2 has zombie mode and splitscreen multiplayer, so if you have fun playing fast rounds against random people or left for dead-style 4 player vs zombies co-op then it’s a good choice. Honestly if you are into online multiplayer you might as well go for Black Ops 2 since it has the most people online now and you won’t always be playing die-hard multi-year veterans like you would likely find in MW1 or 2. Still be prepared for a sharp learning curve initially.
Assuming you are looking for something where you and your son can just hang out on the couch and play for a few hours, I would definitely recommend something like Borderlands 1/2, or Resistance 1/2. With the exception of Borderlands 2 you can pick any of these up for $20 or less and they’ve all been way more fun for me and my wife to play than any COD game. Borderlands is more of an open world/RPG type shooter, but the teamwork aspect (especially in 2) makes it a lot of fun to play with someone in the same room. It scales based on the number of players so I found it to be an even better game with more people. Resistance is much more of a Point A-Point B shooter, but well designed levels and fun weapons. All four are worth trying out.
