I’d like to refer everyone to post #80.
Whoosh?
The point is, most people who find meaning in the bible don’t find it in Leviticus or Deuteronomy or what have you. They look to the later parts.
I don’t think the interpretations of those books alone are necessarily incorrect, but the bible as a whole ultimately isn’t about those books, it’s about the NT.
Maybe someone more knowledgeable than me can explain why things were so harsh than and less so now. Personally I just think that God had a change of heart.
Additionally, comparing the bible to a horror movie just doesn’t work, unless you’re talking about Revelation. Those that claim that the writing makes for a more intimate experience with horrific violence just haven’t read it. Like what Mr2001 said:
Let me tell you, the bible isn’t very immersive. Particularly in the OT, it’s written from a very detached point of view. I’d bet that you haven’t really read the bible, otherwise you’d know that.
I missed that post the first time around. I don’t know if he’s so much of a raving loon. He reminds me of some people I knew in high school who drew the anarchy sign on their hands and took Marilyn Manson seriously and described themselves as Satanists because they thought that made them rebellious and cool. Or in other words, an annoying teenager. I mean, I’m an annoying teenager myself (19 years old on 8/7), but at least I’m not obnoxious.
I’ve got a couple’a rabbis who’d disagree with that.
I doubt they would. Rabbis are interested in the Tanakh, not the Bible.
Now you see why I never passed myself off as a rabbi. ;j
That brings up a question I’ve had. Do most Jews read the entire Old Testament? It would be a shame if they missed out on Ecclesiastes, my favorite book in the whole bible.
