Cambridge MiniDope

Hi guys - you beat me to it. Count me in

BTW is anyone here not a mathmo?

Social sciences. Would you like fries with that?

I remember seeing someone else from cambridge too… hold on…

Does anyone know e-logic?

yep, Shade, me. Literature & linguistics here.

Sorry, I just saw Kabbes’s and kitarak’s discusion in another thread, and it was surreal seeing my lecturers being discussed on the SDMB.

Wow, it’s starting to take off.

Anyone want to volunteer to help me organise this? Dates, what to do, etc… I’m admittedly rather a novice at organising big things. and have never been to an actual Dopefest. I suspect I may be rather out of my league here…

(Mentally tallies the number of people thinking “Oh, now he tells us. Never mind then.” ;))

Angua: Don’t worry. I promise not to look.

C K Dexter Haven: I’m afraid August isn’t doable. I was thinking of something towards the end of this term (within 8 weeks from now), and August is out of term time anyway (part of the point of this being that we have a fair number of students at Cambridge lurking around here somewhere).

Plus there’s the added disadvantage for me that I’d be in the wrong country at the time.

I’ve semi-organised a couple of Londopes. You don’t need to do much - just suggest a suitable meeting point/pub, give them a call and see if they don’t mind a bunch of us decending o them and perhaps suggest something to do during the day. A museum for the cultured among us maybe? Know of any decently priced B & Bs?

Aside to Kabbes - fancy coming over for dinner one weekend soon?

Fran, that would be fantastic. Check your inbox!

I don’t need to do much? Excellent. The perfect kind of organisation!

So, what kind of dates are convenient for people? I was thinking some time between one and two months from now, preferably a saturday or sunday, but this is very flexible.

Incidentally, considering the apparently high number of mathematicians involved I think the culture level shall be low.

Right, count me in - its only a short train ride from Brum. Places
to go, which aren’t pubs, er, I recall that there are a few nice cafes about, just can’t remember anywhere at the moment. We tended to hang out at the Pickerel or the Castle (up the hill), both of which are pub, but very nice ones!

I think there’s a couple of coffee houses on Pembroke Street.

BTW Shades, I was a NatSci/Physicist.

Oh, and for the culturally inclined - Kettle’s Yard is very nice, or even just wandering around some of the older colleges…

And, kitarak, on behalf of my SO, I resent your last statement  He’s a mathmo, and a fairly cultured one at that.

It was entirely tongue in cheek I assure you, seeing as I’m a mathematician and consider myself to be at least moderately cultured.

My Cafe of choice is Clown’s (which sounds silly, but really isn’t). If we go there during the day time it won’t be too busy, and it has a nice atmosphere to it (not to mention a lovely selection of food and drink). It’s a little bit of a walk from the town center, but not nearly as much as (for example) the Castle.

I think the coffee houses on Pembroke street are prohibitively small, but it’s been a while since I’ve been there so I may be misremembering.

kitarak, my post was intended in similar jest. Most of my friends are in fact mathmos, so I only joke

Clown’s is my cafe of choice also, but considering it’ll be the middle or end of term it’ll be packed. I’ll admit that the Castle isn’t the closest place by a long shot. I’m at a loss. Anyone else got any bright ideas? Aren’t there a couple of nice places near the Grafton Centre?

One or two months from now… we could say last weekend in March maybe? Or around then? Do you have exams or anything?

I’d like to have a look round the university.

And Alex B and I are both philosophy grads - we’ll fill the culture quota

Fran, really not promising anything but I’ve a feeling that as a graduate I may be entitled to take a couple of guests to top table in formal hall in my college at least twice a term. I’ve never looked into this, but I believe it is the case. If (BIG if) this is the case, would you and Alex be interested in a dinner-under-unusual-circumstances?

On the other hand, maybe it’s a dumb idea given that there’ll probably be a dope-dinner instead and we won’t know anyone on that top table. But sometimes I have these random thoughts and feel the need to throw them out there just in case.

I was thinking that lower table formal hall would be a fun kind of dopefest.

The tricky thing is thinking what pubs are going to have any space in at all. Almost everywhere will be filled to bursting with students.

Dunno if I’ll be able to attend. I worry that I spent far too much money on internet get-togethers last year.

I suppose one could always book the “party” section at McDonalds?

Actually, can we not just have a Gardi’s? I still wake up at night dreaming of chips-inna-pitta. Mmmm… chips-inna-pitta.

I’m bummed you’re planning not to be there Tansu. You seriously rock.

See, these so-called senior institutions claim to be all cultured ‘n’ stuff, but when you see their real culinary inclinations …

The Plain People of the Straight Dope: And what gastronomic extravaganzas did you indulge in at Edinburgh, Steve? Doner kebabs, Pot Noodles, haggis and the occasional deep-fried Mars Bar, wasn’t it?

Yes indeedy. Made me the man I am today.

The trick with formals is to do an all change between courses, so you get to talk to everyone.
