I saw it linked on Twitter yesterday, but it’s fallen so far down my feed I can’t find it. Has anyone seen this and can link to it?
It opens with a clear blue sky, pans down to the horizon in a nice suburban neighborhood, birds are chirping. Text on the screen says something like, “Why don’t you take a break from all these negative campaign ads. [pause] Read your campaign pamphlets, and vote for the candidate you think is best.” Camera then pans over to the yard sign of the candidate who put the ad out. I *believe *it was an Oregon ad.
As long as we’re talking state ads up in here, I heard one of the funniest things I’ve heard in a while on the radio yesterday.
It was an ad for Republican Renee Schulte, who’s running for reelection to the Iowa House (my district, actually). The ad opened with the usual ominous attacks on her opponent and his wasteful spending, then changed to happy music and all the good things Ms. Schulte brings to life. Among them? “She’ll cut the deficit for future generations.”
Umm … Iowa’s constitution mandates a balanced budget each year. There’s no such thing as a state budget deficit. So, good job, Renee, I guess?
Talk about hitting “low information” voters. Almost all the GOP candidates running for state offices have some variation of the debt/deficit cutting emphasis, riding on the coattails of the national Tea Party/GOP agenda. It’s just laughable when there’s no such thing as a state budget deficit, and it’s constitutionally impossible.
