Ok, so a little history: Shortly after my boyfriend and I started dating a few years ago he gave me a beautiful diamond journey necklace, with the characteristic waving pattern of diamonds. Since then he has topped himself many times with other various pieces of jewelry in the same style, including another necklace. I currently only wear the second necklace, but I feel bad that the original piece is just sitting in my jewelry box.
So here are my questions: Can I take this to a jeweler and have the pendant mounted onto a ring? Would they be able to curve the setting over a band, so the setting curves around my finger instead of straight across?
I’ve tried asking the local small town jeweler that my bf bought it from, and he said it wasn’t possible, so I let it go for a year or so, but now I’m thinking about it again.
IANAJeweller, but I would think it would be very hard to take the pendant as-is and simply bend it, since the metal would be stressed and strained in ways it wasn’t designed to, and the links between diamonds would likely become much more fragile. Rings are more likely to be knocked around and I would think the metal would break. One option, however, would be to use the diamonds from the pendant in a new custom-made ring setting, which could have a wave. It might be a little expensive, though.
Alternatively, swap out your necklaces every few days!
When you bend and curve metal, it distorts and if the metal has been fashioned to hold stones, then bending the metal will distort the prongs or bezels that are holding the stones. More than likely, if someone tried it, the stones will pop out.
If you can post a picture of the piece, I could offer recommendations of what someone might be able to do with it, however.
