Ok, so this thread is another “ID this old…” one, but I am trying to find out the story about a particular old daytime soap opera I happened to see a glimpse of as a kid. Not exactly sure when it was, but I figure it must have been in the very early 1980’s (81 or 82 maybe) as I do know I was in my “tween” years. My brothers were home too, so it must have been some vacation time from school rather than a sick-day.
ANYWAYYYY, it must have been the start of the show - you know how they’d show a 30 second teaser as to what characters and story-lines were being shown that day. But what I remember is a man and woman met up in what must have been a funeral home and started discussing some ongoing crisis that was taking place. Just as they were talking, one of them looks over and sees a closed casket at the far end of the room. The lid is being pushed at from the inside. They both stare in amazement, there is an extreme close-up of the woman gaping in shock, and there is a fade-out to a commercial.
When the show resumed, the man and woman open up the coffin to find a lady inside very much alive. They both knew her, who seemed to me a mature lady (though seeing I was 12 years old, she may have been just 30 y.o. and I would’ve thought she looked ‘older.’) They help the lady out the coffin; the lady is clearly VERY drunk. While the man and woman stand there shocked - jaws on the floor - the drunk lady tries to make polite small talk, ignoring the bizarre situation she was in (inside a closed casket!) Finally the woman asks - “What. were. you. doing. in. the. COFFIN???” - and the drunk lady tries to make light of the situation, and pretend that’s she wasn’t drunk, or at least not as ‘tipsy’ as she clearly was.
It was at that point that one of my brothers said something like “I don’t want to watch a stoopid SOAP OPERA” and changed the channel. We watched cartoons, or “Batman” reruns or something instead. But I have to admit, that scenario has stayed with me to this day, and I occasionally do wonder what the hell WAS that drunk lady doing in a damn casket??
I can’t even tell you which soap it occurred on. But I was just wondering if somebody out there who watched daytime soaps in the early 80s might remember this happeningn and could explain what it was all about?
