Can I network a Playstation wirelessly?

Is it possible to connect a Playstation 2 to my home network wirelessly. My DSL line only enters the house at one point, two floors above where the PS2 is situated. We use a combined Phoneline/Ethernet network now, but would considering switching to WiFi if the PS2 can connect.

I’m sure there are members of the Teeming Millions who can help me out. Thank you.

Linksys and Amazon have guides for doing just that. It looks like it could get expensive though.

Ah HA!!!

I used to work in the wireless networking field, doing tech support

I will start by saying this: each floor you go through, or a cement or brick wall, take away about 15-20 feet from what it says on the distance. For each drywall/plaster wall take away 10. So if you have to go through 2 floors, and (because of the diagonal three walls (drywall lets say) take away about 60-70 feet from what it says the distance range is.

Now lets say the range on the product says 100 feet. This would mean the transmitter would go about 30-40 feet throught those walls. If you drew a line straight from the wireless hub to the wireless DSL modem would it be under that range? You better hope so.

Next: RF. Do you use any electronics that run on the same RF as the wireless devices you plan on buying? If so, junk’em or it’s not going to work well. This means wireless phones, wireless doorbells, uber-remotes that run on radio. If you live in a cramped apartment building with weak walls and your neightbor has one… you might be in trouble. Is there a microwave over in the line between the two points? I hope not.

If you have furthur, more specific questions lemme know… please include which brand you might go with.

It’s two floors, almost straight up, figure 24-36 feet.

The phones may be a problem. We also have an intercom system, but it’s seldomly used. We’re still debating the whole idea; we’re not close on a brand yet. I’m not sure I want to drop another $200 plus games just yet (plus whatever the network adapter for the PS2 costs).

US $30 for the adapter

Network adapter for PS2… $50
PS2 and some games… $300
Wireless networking system… $250

Making online friends while playing Socom: Navy Seals… Priceless

As cool as SOCOM looks, I still have Counter-Strike! PS2 hasn’t yet come with the killer online game yet that makes it a ‘must-have’; now it’s just a ‘wouldn’t that be another cool, fun way to avoid studying for the CFA’. As if I needed that.

(P.S. - I’m pretty sure the intercom is FM)

With regards to the distance limitations, You might want to look into a pringle’s can yagi antenna. This guy’s claiming distances of over 10 miles…

I believe Linksys makes a wireless card specially for the PS/2.

Since you already have a phoneline network installed, you can buy another phoneline bridge unit to attach to the PS/2 (assuming it is close to a phone jack). I installed a Powerline bridge between our PS/2 and the switch. Both should work fine. You can probably find phoneline-based bridges cheaper since they never caught on.

I’ll look into that DSP, thanks. Phoneline gear is hard to find now. It never caught on and no one seems to carry any. Still, it works quite well for me.

Phoneline gear is hard to find because most of it is total crap  Not that a lot of the wireless stuff is much better.
