Can I switch my window screen side?

In my living room there is a large window with two panes, side by side. One side is screened and the other side is just the glass. I want the screen on the other side. Is it just a matter of popping both out and switching or does the frame decide which side goes where?

It seems like it’s just a matter of switching them but I don’t know how to do it myself. I’ll have to hire a handyman to come do the switch but I don’t want to call someone out only to look like (more of) an idiot if the combination is set in stone and can’t be switched.

I can’t imagine this doesn’t depend on exactly the make and model of the window if it was a prefeb one that was installed. If it was custom made, then no one here could possibly tell you.

I suggest that you find a glazier. All my windows are double glazed and I was impressed how they dismantled them to replace a broken pane. I could never have done it myself and I reckon I am fairly handy.

I guess I’ll probably have to have someone come in to look and see if it’s possible.

A few years ago I had a blind installed in between two windowpanes and the guy who did it, popped the windows out in about 15 seconds. I couldn’t believe how easily they just popped right out.

I just assumed it would be the same for these windows, as well.

Too many possibilities to go over but if this is not a first floor window you may want help just so you don’t end up with the screen crashing to the ground. It’s rare that moving a window screen takes more than a minute to do or requires any tools.

It would help if you could find someplace (like Imgur) to post a few photos. In my house (built 1995) the screens all just clip in to the outside of the frame. It takes me about 10 seconds to install or remove a screen. In your situation the side with no screen might very well be set up to accept a screen. But it’s hard to say without seeing it.

OK I’ll take some pictures tomorrow when the light is better.

Hopefully this is the case, then it would be just a simple matter to move the screen from one side to the other …

A neighbour came by and I asked him about the windows. He took a look, said “I can switch those easily” and he did! It took less than 5 minutes. He just popped out the screen, slid the other window across and popped the screen back in the other side. Easy peasy!

yes, there are two general types of window frames. Those with screen holding rails, which will be part of the window frame and exist at any opening window section, and those which require additional clips to hold the screen.

So if neither rails nor clips exist at one window opening, you’d need to have them added.

Or you might add clips if you need to install the screen but can’t use the existing device.
