I ate half a tub of Ben & Jerry’s Full Vermonty and this afternoon I swear I did over twice the amount of shit I normally do in a sitting and I was there for over 15 minutes trying to get it all out.
It’s possible that you’re slightly lactose intolerant. I am and dairy in small doese doesn’t bother me but large doses (such as a milk shake or too much ice cream) will really do a number on my digestive system…
Ah that could be it. I’m actually about to throw the rest of my Ben and Jerry’s supplies in the bin cos I’ve been eating really healthy recently (got my body fat down to 11%) up until last night when I scoffed half a container of ice cream and I’ve done the same tonight. More fun on the crapper at work tomorrow I expect…
Actually it may not mean lactose intolerent at all. One year I didn’t eat any meat for a whole year (eggs and milk, but no meat). When I started to eat meat again, my system was screwed up for about a week.
Also I was on the Atkin’s Diet for 7 months. When I went off it it also screwed up my system for about a week.
So you’re suggesting that my major sudden deviation from my healthy diet caused the effect?
Actually, the simple answer to the OP is “yes,” quite apart from, diet or lactose-intolerance related, uhh, issues.
Check the ingredient list-- mannitol and sorbitol are often used as sweeteners, but they are also used as laxatives. (Mannitol especially-- it’s primary use, apart from cutting illicit powdered drugs, is as a baby laxative.)
Yes, but the original poster specified Ben & Jerry’s which are made with natural ingrediants. No artificial sweetners…
I’ve seen it ALL on these boards now! LOL
Can’t say I’ve had this experience with ice cream, but I notice as I get older, KFC does that to me quicksmart!
‘its’, dammit.
Just spent some time at B&J’s website looking over their posted ingredients. – doesn’t seem as though they’re very big on polyol sweeteners.

tremorviolet, while obviously I have to agree with you to a certain extent, since I looked for myself and saw that they don’t appear to use mannitol, Ben & Jerry’s “all natural” orientation (such as it is) wouldn’t preclude the use of “artificial” sweeteners, and it could be argued that mannitol and sorbitol are both available from natural sources.
Beyond that, B&J aren’t as pure as all that-- They use hydrogenated oils, processed ingredients, synthetic preservatives, and artificial flavours-- just not as liberally as most crap processed food.
Cites: (because I’m bored, not because I’m argumentative.)
Ben & Jerry’s ingredients (Check out “Everything but the…™” for some synthetic ingredients.)
Orange juice can have a laxative effects in kids simply because it is sweet. Although mannitol is used as a laxative, eating a lot of other sugars can have a similar effect. Between this factor and mild lactose intolerance, you’ve probably nailed it.
Why not try taking lactase pills next time you have ice cream? If they work, you’re ahead of the game and know to keep using them. If they don’t work, you can cross one possible cause off your list and you’ve still had the ice cream as a reward.
