Just curious here, but I was talking with Mrs.Phlosphr this morning about my brother-in-law who is getting a vasectomy. I was wondering can one still have an orgasm? And if so how? I thought he vas defrons were snipped or stapled when you get a vasectomy? Would that not prevent anything from coming out? Wouldn’t it create a terrible backup ???
IANAD(octor), but if I recall correctly, all a vasectomy does is shut down the connection to the sperm. Sperm is one part of semen. So, you have sex like always, you orgasm like always, and out comes semen (just minus the sperm) like always.
Sperm is created in the gonads. Seminal fluid is created in the seminal vesicles. So with an orgasm all you ejaculate is seminal fluid.
In my understanding, orgasm and ejaculation are completely distinct entities that just happen to occur together most of the time.
The sperm is created just like before the snip job, but then it’s reabsorbed by the body. Like he said, sperm is only one component of seminal fluid.
Speaking from personal experience, there’s no lessening of fluid amount and no reduction of, ahem, delight.
My only bad result was a couple honkin’ painful infections I got shortly after the operation. Hurt like heck, but antibiotics cleared them up and no subsequent problems in the last six or seven years.
I’ll tell you in four weeks.
There have been lots of vasectomy threads in the SDMB, but they’ve mostly dealt with the procedure itself and the aftermath of the operation.
I’ve been snipped now for about 10 years. (By the way, my experience was uneventful). All the posters above are correct. There is no way of telling whether or not there is sperm in the ejaculate either by appearance or feel or volume. Obviously, a microscope would identify the absence of sperm, but not too many bedrooms have a microscope as a sex toy.
And in case the OP was actually concerned about the orgasm itself rather than the ejaculate, I can unambiguously report that having a vasectomy does not diminish the experience one iota (thank God!).
Indeed, it is in my experience not uncommon to have an orgasm without ejaculating, especially if there are two or three orgasms close together – only one is accompanied by ejaculation (oh, for youth!)
If men who’d had vasectomies couldn’t orgasm, there’d be no such thing as vasectomies.
You beat me to it, Dances with Caterpillars. Given that the entire point of a vasectomy is for one to be able to have orgasms without the risk of making little babies, I’m . . . taken aback that an apparently adult, married male would ask such a question.
Phlosphr, I looked up a link to the male anatomy not too long ago for another thread. I’m too busy/lazy to do it again, but do a search on “eunuch” in Comments on Cecil’s Columns for the last 2 months, and you can find the link. Or just google “male human reproductive anatomy” and the like.
Basically, the description is as follows. The testicles in the nutsack create the sperm. The sperm travel up the vas deferens around and under the bladder, where the seminal vesicle is located. This generates most of the fluid. Then the tube runs into the prostate gland, which is where it meets the urethra. There is also the cowper’s gland that secretes a small amount of pre-ejaculate fluid that helps prime the path and reduce residual acidity from the urine.
A vasectomy cuts the vas deferens. There are a couple different methods, but the point is to keep the sperm from going anywhere. The sperm will be made, die, and be reabsorbed into the body. The rest of the glands operate naturally, and you continue having wanton sex, oblivious to the lack of little swimmers.
If the answer to the OP is, “No”, then all I can say is that the Better Half has been faking it brilliantly for the last nine years or so.
Sperm is a very small part of the ejaculate. The path from the prostate and the cowper’s glands which contribute the bulk of the ejaculate remains uninterrupted. Ejaculate looks, smells and tastes the same as before the operation.
No only is orgasm possible, I’ve found that my sex drive actually increased! I didn’t think that could happen seeing I was already horny as a goat. But it did.
I wouldn’t say my sex drive increased, but my satisfaction level certainly went up afterward. No more condoms, messy foams, or elaborate preparations. No more fear of something failing! I got my vasectomy about 6-7 years ago, and I’ve never had cause to regret it.
For a male who is sure that he never wishes to conceive an offspring, it is the absolute best!
Phlosphr asked: “Can one have an Orgasm after having a Vasectomy? How?”
To question #1 the answer is a resounding “YES!”
To question #2 the answer is “The usual ways!”
In all seriousness, I was snipped last year, and it has made my sex life much better, as now I don’t have to use birth control devices, and don’t have to worry about my wife getting pregnant. No stopping in the midst of passion to put on a condom or anything. Getting snipped was less painful than a teeth cleaning, for me, and I had no pain afterwards either. I had the “open-ended” “no-scalpel” version.
