Can you say that you think someone should be banned? Can you start a “petition” thread in the Pit collecting votes for a person’s banning? Would the mods ban the guy assuming he had enough people saying he should be? Would the thread be ignored or shut down?
I’m not suggesting that this should be the case, nor can I think of anyone that I feel should be banned. I’m just asking.
I’d imagine that for a person to be banned the Admin doing the banning would have to believe the person deserves to be banned based on their behaviour rather than what other dopers think of them. I imagine a petition could not directly or indirectly affect the decision at all.
But IANA Mod/admin.
Disagree with the rules or other Dopers all you want, but adminstration of the SDMB belongs to Mods and Admins only.
BTW, I saw the Pit thread in question, and realise it’s not you seeking to get someone banned. Good question, too. A ruling can perhaps prohibit this kind of behavior in the future, should they rule thay way…
But the question isn’t whether we can get someone banned, it’s whether we’re allowed to ask that they be banned, just as we’re disallowed from calling other posters trolls. The administration would certainly still be free to cheerfully ignore our request in any case.
Then again, if they allowed people to start up threads calling for a banning (regardless of the eventual outcome), a poster who is unpopular for his or her views (rather than for his or her conduct) might be targeted even if they’d done nothing banworthy.
Which is what I was trying to say. You, however, have surpassed my abilities to communicate in a meaningful way both here and in real life. Dan THE Man!
Sure, members can call bad behavior to the attention of the Moderators.
Banning is not a matter of a public opinion poll, of course. However, y’all can help us moderate the Boards by calling jerkish behavior to our attention (using the REPORT THIS POST button), and by calling multiple jerkish behaviors to our attention (via emails.) There is always a chance that we haven’t seen the multiple jerkish behaviors – especially if they’ve not been reported. A slim chance, I think, but a chance.
Are they frowned on? Well, if they’re outside the Pit, yes, they’re frowned on.
Inside the Pit, I don’t know that we’ve ever formulated a policy. I don’t think we’d like to see dozens of 'em – just because you’re angry at someone doesn’t mean they’re acting like a jerk. They may (in the opinion of the Moderators) just be opinionated, for instance, or not very bright, or… And, of course, they may think that YOU’RE being a jerk for advocating their banning, where you may (in the opinion of the Moderators) just be opinionated or not very bright or…
