I know this probably belongs elsewhere, but hopefully someone will answer quickly and the thread will die.
What server is it on? I gather that it is on the #straightdope channel, but what steps must I take with mIRC? Any help will be hugely appreciated.

The only trick is to select “Undernet” from the IRC servers option. Once you connect type in #straightdope.

Or you could just do this:
Go to http://www.undernet.org/webchat.php and click “connect”. You will then be prompted to download and install the java applet. Choose a username. In the bottom window type /join #straightdope.
