K, so I downloaded MIRC. And I want to get into the Straightdope chat I hear everyone talking about, but I have no Idea how.
I’ve heard various people say something about “undernet”, and thats about it.
Help? ANybody?
You have to go to the list of servers, choose an “undernet” server and connect. Then /join #straightdope.
You should be aware that the boards and chat have no connection whatsoever. Also, chat stuff can not be discussed on the boards.

To clarify for Sapphire, the server name doesn’t need to say “undernet” in order to access the straightdope channel. Just about any server on the list will do and, of course, different servers will have different people on the channel.
But Jeff - while you could type in /join #straightdope using any server, the only #straightdope in which you’ll find people is on the Undernet server.
Not true, I’ve found them on other servers too.

I just got MIRC a few days ago and the first time I was in #straightdope, I was on the default (not undernet) server. IIRC, I have yet to use an undernet server but there were plenty of people in #straightdope the two times I was there.
What server were you using? Who was there? I am intrigued.

Oh lord, I’m such an immigration geek. I saw the abbreviation “MIRC” and immediately decided it must have something to do with the Midwest Immigrants’ Rights Center, a local nonprofit which represents people in political asylum cases.

If you type /join #straightdope on any server, you will definitely go into a channel called #straightdope. If there isn’t one already on that server, the system “creates” one as soon as you type that command.
Really? I don’t remember selecting an undernet server.
dan, as I said above, there were lots of people in the channel both times I was there.
My mistake, I missed that.
Recognize any of 'em? 
I wonder if there are multiple channels with this name, some connecting to this site, others having absolutely no connection, not even the tenuous connection that the undernet channel has (in name only, really).
When I have time, I’ll try a bunch of different servers and see what happens.
Well. I’ve managed to Get into the #straightdope, and I can type, but thats about it. It’k take me a while to do all the cool stuff yet.
