I believe it says, “Someone comes there, because is, don’t you think?. When it is [maua], it is at all good. When the other present [yo] - it is the player who is not, however just a little it comes clink, don’t you think?. When [maua] you do, you permit.”
Though, I have to admit, my Japanese is a little rusty.
C’mon, that doesn’t make any sense at all. I’m told this is a quote from Ichiro answering a question about being overtaken for the batting title. Something to the effect of “I don’t mind if it is Mauer. If it were some crappy player I’d be mad.”
I ran the Babelfish translation and thought it was amusing and figured your thread could use a bump.
Babelfish can be useful for short phrases, and for some languages. But its Japanese is consistently terrible. Even worse than its Chinese. Though endless hours of fun with the right crowd, erotic literature, and a few beers.
From Nikkan Sports. Trying to figure out the Ichiro quote:
「誰がそこにくるか、ですからね。マウアーだったら全然いい。ほかのしょーもない選手だったら、ちょっとカチンとくるけどね。マウアーやったら許す」。
“Somebody’s gonna do it. If it was Mauer, that would be fine. If was some other nothing player, I’d get mad. If it was Mauer I could forgive him.”
My wife thinks this isn’t a Japanese quote from Ichiro as he is usually much more polite. It may have originally been in English, then translated somewhat roughly.
Ah. I see what you were doing there. That is kind of a fun time waster.
Thanks! I found another translation over on a Mariner Blog. A poster from Japan translated it as:
" It’s a matter of who does it. Mauer, I don’t mind at all. If it were some other crappy player I would be pissed off. Since it’s Mauer I will allow it."
Ichiro comes up with some awesome quotes but I thought that was a little over the top for him.
