Actually, in reference to my post there was an extremely subtle point to the joke. Earlier in the thread people were comparing people with advantages, be they looks or intelligence and I was pointing out that these advantages are intrinsically a part of the package and stripped of all of these, who would go out with anyone indeed?
I hear that. I would much rather be approached as well. That means there’s a much better chance of something happening. Women get hit on all the time by doing nothing. If a cute one approaches me, the deal is essentially signed and delivered.
It’s not so much lazy as it is assuring. It’s getting rid of the middleman.
Well, um, actually, I once did temp work for a telecom firm in an office building whose largest tenant was the local offices of Smith Barney. And I could not help but notice all the women who worked for Smith Barney who typically went to work in pantsuits in which the pants were so tight that if they’d had a dime stuck to their butts when they got up in the morning when they put their pants on, you could have told not only that there was a dime there, you could have told where it was minted.
And they all looked GREAT in those pantsuits. Now, it may have been a coincidence. But I think Smith Barney hired those women for their looks. Doesn’t happen in every firm … the telecom firm I worked for needed techies, they didn’t pay much attention to looks. But lookism does work for some people in some businesses, especially sales-oriented businesses.
Are you saying that less attractive people are not prejudiced in the same way? As I’ve said before, I don’t think people have been disagreeing that there is a certain amount of discrimination based on looks in some workplaces, I think they’re disagreeing with your assertion that it is only “pretty people” who discriminate.
From your description, it doesn’t sound like you have any idea what types of jobs these women did. Perhaps they are sales and marketing people, where a pleasant physical appearance and a level of comfort with that appearance will help you get ahead. Note that I’m saying it will help be more successful, not help you get a job you didn’t earn.
And think about what you are focusing on. Asses so hard you could bounce a dime off of them. OK. So how hot do you need to be to say to yourself, “I’m going to buy a nice suit and workout so that I can feel comfortable that I look good in it?” I’d argue that you don’t need to be innately hot at all if you are willing to work at looking hot. Innate hotness is wonder to behold, but some people end up looking a bit hot because they channel some of the same drive that is getting them ahead at their job into looking the part.
This reminds me of a conversation I had with my brother a few years ago - he was noticing how athletes competing at the olympics are really hot. I pointed out that I didn’t think that they were actually really hot, but instead were very fit, worked out all the time and probably ate a good diet, all of which will increase anyone’s hottness.
I mean, some people are genetically gifted in the looks department, but I think a lot of “hot” people are actually just fit and healthy - they exercise and eat a good diet. If they happen to buy an attractive suit to show the goods off, that’s just gravy.
