I haven’t dehumanized them. But neither will I pretend we’re dealing with something that falls within normal parameters.
I know a few Alabamians. They have been brainwashed by Fox “News” and the whackadoodle far right influences for so long, I don’t believe they are persuadable.
I’ve mentioned in other threads that I think the one good thing that has come out of Trump and his ilk attaining power is that it shines a very stark light on what the choices actually are. So yes; call it a lance for the boil. I don’t think people will become persuaded until they see the actual consequences of their politics and subsequent choices.
I wish it could be otherwise, but I imagine you know as well as anyone what it’s like to have a productive, factual, evidence-based discussion with these folks. Perhaps the reality will snap them out of their fervor.
Alabama voters know who and what this guy is. If they choose him to represent them in the Senate, they know what they’re choosing. This is how democracy is supposed to work, like it or not.
That’s not McConnell’s worry. Don’t forget, McConnell is shit useless at actually getting legislation passed. His only significant victory in the last decade was turning the Republican Party into a group of whiny brats that stomp their feet and cry when they don’t get everything they want. Three shots at healthcare, and nada. Tax reform stands a good chance of being dead in the water at this point. Everyone talks about Trump having zero legislative victories at this point - the same can be said of McConnell.
McConnell can’t worry about legislation - he just needs to keep getting Republicans elected. “Republicans support a pedophile” can discourage a lot of conservative voters.
McConnell doesn’t care about Moore’s policies - he cares about protecting the (R). He’s the Roger Goodell of the Senate.
How do we know that? Has anyone done an authoritative dive into the allegations of Paula Jones, Kathleen Willey, and Juanita Broaddrick? I’m not seeing a link here.
In the absence of such an accounting, all I have is that the ‘hunting of the President’ wingnuts thought that Lewinsky was their ticket to bringing Clinton down, not Jones or Willey. And when Broaddrick’s allegations became public shortly after the Senate voted not to convict on the impeachment charges, the wingnuts didn’t make much of them, pretty much dropping the whole issue.
Finally, I don’t think it was a positive testimonial to the integrity of any of the three to let themselves be used as political weapons against Hillary Clinton, who after all was an aggrieved party herself with respect to Bill’s affairs and attempted affairs. They who claimed to be the victims of sexual assault sat there quietly while Donald Trump stalked Hillary Clinton around that stage, taking his side against her.
I am willing to look at all the evidence if someone’s willing to pull it together, or if someone already has. But absent that, I’m going to remain skeptical.
For me, when fans of Bill Clinton say things like this, they sound just like fans of Roy Moore. If people gave the same credence to accusations against BC that they do accusations against Republicans, he would have been destroyed. Instead, he’s still admired.
Some equivalences are false, and that includes yours. Who are the examples of underage girls who Bubba went after? Or adults who did not give consent (if you choose to believe Broaddrick you’re calling her a perjurer, yanno, and please be specific about the Jones case)? When did Bubba get caught perving on 14 year olds?
Just what do you think is comparable, other than your desire for it to be so?
I know what the allegations are against Moore. They’ve been linked to here in this thread. The best he seems to have are that the instances of actual assault didn’t happen. But did he spend his thirties hitting on barely legal high school girls? It’s about 99.999% certain.
Now, why should I give similar credence to dimly-remembered accusations against Bill Clinton from 20 years ago, with the offhand remarks of Dopers for added support?
That just isn’t enough. Like I said:
Maybe the evidence is really pretty damning. But nobody here is linking to it. So what am I supposed to do - put full credence in those offhand remarks and dimly-remembered accusations? This is the Dope, dammit. No.
Is this poll credible? The NRSC says Moore should drop out, then – hey, presto! – they produce a poll showing a 21-point swing to Jones over the course of two weeks. I’d love to believe that public opinion has turned so decisively against him, I’m just skeptical. Anybody have a read on how seriously to take these numbers?
I’ll add that I hope someone trustworthy does gather together every bit of what we know about Bill Clinton’s interactions with those three women, so that we can settle this issue as much as it can be settled. If the evidence supports their claims, then we ought to know about it, just as we know about so many other men whose histories as abusers have come to light lately. If it doesn’t, let’s get that out there too. Let’s give him his day of reckoning, whatever comes out of it.
Or even better, if Jones is running against both Moore and a write-in candidate (Sessions or otherwise).
The clip is worth a watch to see an archetypal white-supremacist in action: the guy is oozing with condescension and contempt for the two Inferiors he’s having to deal with (a woman and a non-white guy).
A real slime-ball. I’ve been watching Ali Velshi for years and always admire his smarts and his calm demeanor; it was never more impressive than during that interview.
Power to the people includes the power to be wrong. If no way is found to shame Judge Teenyboink away from the election, then let it go forward. And if the people of Alabama vote him into office, he should be seated.
Makes me wish there were a good herbal remedy for nausea. Oh, wait!..
Christ, Moore’s lawyer suggested that Ali Velshi’s “background” would help him understand to Roy Moore’s penchant for sexual assault.
:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
Would someone just tell Roy Moore that he doesn’t have to defend himself? Everyone knows he’s a bigoted creep and apparently the folks of Alabama will still vote for him anyway.
