Glad that Moore won. Christian supremacism and in favor of outlawing homosexuality is a logical extension of the path of the Republican party recently, and will make it considerably harder for the party to lead and organize their senate caucus. Plus, the Democrats will have a very small but still real chance to pick up the senate seat if they can successfully show how nuts and bigoted Moore is.
I can agree with your second sentence but the last one is not going to happen. There is no real chance the D’s will pick up this seat. ALABAMA. It really is a state full of homophobes, racists and ignorant, anit-intellectual, anti-science deeply religious and reactionary people. Moore will win in a walk.
Probably. But we’ll see. Stranger things have happened. There are a lot of likely Democrats in Alabama who didn’t vote in the last election.
A very, very slim chance, but still not zero.
Ok fine Mr. Eternal Optimist. A 0.0001% chance.
This is a greater slap in the faces to McConnell and Trump than Hillary ever managed.
$10 million down the drain…
And yet, amazingly unsatisfying. The unacceptable choice was defeated by the even more unacceptable choice.
Meh. A Republican Senator is a Republican Senator. Nothing changes.
Because you actually agree with his “Christian nation” and other views, or because you enjoy the spectacle of liberals having kittens, and Moore will be better than Strange at upsetting them? Or both? (It’s a serious question, because Moore is such a wingnut that it’s hard to believe even the most hard-core conservatives on the Dope actually agree with him.)
I am Jewish. Of course I don’t. But he is in a tiny minority on that, so who cares?
I never understood people who latch on to one weird view some candidate has and perseverate on that. Ok, scratch that, I do, it is a useful political stick to flail him with, but in reality, it is immaterial. No, Moore will not be in position to impose any kind of “Christian nation” - ever. So who cares if that’s what he thinks?
To quote P.J. O’Rourke when discussing Clinton vs. Trump, “She’s wrong about absolutely everything, but she’s wrong within normal parameters.”
Pretty close to zero.
Moore will win Alabama. Dems shouldn’t waste an eyelash in that intellectual wasteland.
My hope is that Moore’s win will scare the crap out of Dems/progressives/independents, who will be moved to turn out and defeat similar nutso alt-right candidates in Tennessee, Nevada and Arizona as well as any other seats that may become available as a result of retiring moderate Republicans, and preserve Dem seats in Missouri, Montana, Indiana, West Virginia and North Dakota. All much more winnable elections.
Signs are good.
“Christian nation” is not one weird view, it’s a philosophy that will influence almost every vote he casts. He will be anti-science, anti-environment, anti-everything to do with immigration, civil rights, gay rights, etc. He’ll try to repeal Obamacare, and outlaw abortion, contraception, and recreational drugs.
Never mind that most of that stuff has little or nothing to do with mainstream Christian doctrine. It’s still how American “Christian nation” politicians vote.
I am sorry, I don’t subscribe to your alarmism. He will be a consistent conservative vote. That’s good 'nuff for me.
You could dismiss any flaw by that reasoning. Racist? Who cares, he can’t undo the Civil Rights Act? child molestor? Who cares, he won’t be able to legalize child rape—ever. Anti gun? Who cars, he won’t be in a position to pass a confiscation law…who cares what he thinks?
Of course we care what future senator Moore thinks. He’s a nut job.
Racist/child molester is a personal flaw that is a deal breaker for me. I have my biases. Anti-gun is an ideological deal breaker and that’s only because the gun-grabbers are not that far from majority to be complacent about it.
No, he isn’t. It is silly to dismiss people who have reached high positions in life (such as a state Supreme Court Justice or a Senator) as “nut jobs”. He might have positions you don’t like, but he is as sane as you. This classifying of political opponents as mentally sick or defective stinks of Soviet Union methodology.
He’s a nut.
On a variety of topics.
He will make McConnell, Ryan and many other Republicans cringe on a regular basis.
This guy embraces ignorance and encourages the same in others.
I understand this to mean you don’t care whether Strange or Moore won. Either one would be a “consistent conservative vote.”
Do I correctly summarize your viewpoint, or am I leaving out certain nuance?
Considering I fit into a demographic that Moore wants to oppress via the law of the land, I think I have the right to call him a nut, personally.
I don’t know Strange. I know he was an anti-Trump pro-establishment politician (before his conversion to pro-Trump pro-establishment one). That doesn’t say “consistent conservative vote” to me. Republican establishment is not consistently conservative.
Well, I’m not complacent about conservative Christians Deal breaker.
