Can the Democrats win the Alabama senate special election in December?

I visited my mom in Montgomery over Thanksgiving and hung out with her and my sister and her family (all hardcore fundies). I swore I wouldn’t stir the pot, but I also wouldn’t hold back if politics ever came up. It didn’t, but I had little doubt how my sister and her husband were voting (based on the avalanche of right-wing nonsense he was circulating on FB last year).

But last night I wrote mom pleading that she not vote for Moore, giving her some articles from the National Review and Christianity Today, and she wrote back that based on what she’d heard about Moore, she could never vote for him. This actually surprised me (in a good way), though I suspect sis & BIL almost certainly did.

I had contacted the Jones campaign letting them know I’d be happy to volunteer while I was visiting the state, but never heard back from them (these days, it looks like most of the help they need is a zillion ad buys). I was surprised while I was out there that the number of commercials for the two candidates seemed about even, which meant Jones was giving as good as he could. Keeping my fingers crossed for how today’s events panned out.

AFAIK Senators do not get to change their “classes” in midstream.

In 36 states that currently have the gubernatorial provisional appointment, it lasts until the next biennial election, and if that was not the end of the original term then you have an election to fill only the remainder.

Roy Moore is going to fucking win this election tonight, the hyperventilating about the danger of this man’s “extreme” views from ultra-liberal zealots notwithstanding.

He’s a solid Christian conservative who will support Trump’s pro-growth economic agenda as it relates to tax reform, who will be a vote for Trump’s stellar, conservative judicial nominees to the Supreme Court and lower federal courts, protect the rights of gun owners and the Second Amendment, oppose the ruthless abortion industry, support Trump’s tough-on-crime and border-protection agenda, and more.

I’m not in Alabama, but if I was, I’d vote for him without a moment’s hesitation. MAGA!

What a shock that you support the guy who said that America was better during the time of slavery (and that you don’t consider such views truly extreme)…

I wonder how everyone on this board feels about Doug Jones’s position on guns?
Could he win if he followed the Democratic platform on guns?

Too bad they couldn’t find a pro-life pro-gun Democrat to run in Alabama.

Let’s see… In order, he’s not very Christian, he’s not conservative, Trump doesn’t have a pro-growth agenda, Trump’s judicial nominees are not stellar, he supports the abortion industry, and Trump doesn’t have a tough-on-crime nor a border-protection agenda.

What else have you got?

He said that America has always been a great nation, even during slavery, and that its greatness was despite its shameful history of slavery, not because of it, which we of course overcame with a strong, religiously-motivated civil rights movement in the 1960s.

No, he said specifically that the last time America was great was during slavery. So he thinks that America was better with slavery than it is now. He also said that we should get rid of the Amendments to the Constitution after the 10th. That includes the one that ended slavery.

It’s a fact that Roy Moore said this, so you’re supporting a guy who asserted that America with slavery was better than America now.

No, you made most of that up. He never said that. You’re not telling the truth here. Do you have some kind of “get out of sin free” card for that?

Trump doesn’t support the abortion industry (WTF LMAO), he does have a pro-growth agenda, over a million jobs created and the Dow Jones and stock markets going off the stratosphere, increased consumer confidence etc. and, of course, we have the fact that illegal immigration border crossings are down by a whopping 76 percent, a big part of which is thanks to Trump’s policy of letting ICE and the other border-patrol and enforcement agencies do their jobs and not coddle criminals. Hillary, on the other hand, wanted amnesty across the board for illegal immigrants, as well as to continue DACA, which would have fostered a climate where illegal immigration was encouraged.

Hillary did not want " amnesty across the board for illegal immigrants". And DACA ia widely supposed.

Trump is a pro-choice atheist, one married to not one but two Godless Communists. But continue to lie to yourself as to what he is.

I don’t know why you guys keep paraphrasing. Here’s what was said (accordion to Time and CNN):

“When families were united” is vague. It could be that he meant: All the time prior to the 1950s, including the time of slavery. It’s unclear that he was only referring to pre-Civil War times. Bad enough what he did say, but no need to distort it beyond what was actually said.

Yes, Trump is such a pro-choice atheist, which is why the forces of the abortion industry and radical feminism rallied readily to his side during the 2016 election, right? Planned Parenthood, the National Abortion Rights Action League, EMILY’s List and all the other feminist groups knew so much about his pro-choice views, that they endorsed the first Republican candidate for President since their existence!

Oh wait… They did the opposite…

No one asked him about slavery there – he brought it up himself. I don’t see a way to read that other than he was talking about a time in which we had slavery.

It’s also factually absurd – slavery destroyed and brutalized and tore apart families. But he was asked about when America was last great, and he brought up slavery himself. I didn’t distort anything.

Yup. Lie to yourself all you want, but when you fuck as many imported Eastern European sex slaves, er, “models”, as Trump did back in the late 90s, being pro-birth is not an option.

Polls just closed. Could we get back on topic now?

Trump is an ass is always an appropriate topic.

NYT has some early results posted.

Just one more reason to hate the man: he’s a fuckable-Eastern-European-models-hoarder.
