I have a club chair similar to this one. It has begun to sag on the right hand side terribly. (Well, this wasn’t an expensive chair, so I’m surprised it lasted this long.)
Can this chair be saved? Can I have it fixed so that’s is comfortable again? Notice is all one piece, there isn’t a separate cushion.
If it is fixable, how much would I likely spend? Depending on how much it would cost, it may be better just to buy a new chair. But if I can reasonably have it fixed, I’d rather go that route.
A furniture re-upolsterer could certainly fix the problem, but this kind of work is quite labor intensive and usually (from what I’ve seen) fairly expensive (in the hundreds of dollars) so it’s usually done to higher end furniture. Might be cheaper just to get a new chair.
Is there some kind of organization to whom I can, in good conscience, donate this chair? There is nothing wrong with it (no wholes, etc.) except the sagging problem in the seat.
Guess you were afraid to show us YOUR Archie Bunker chair.
We can’t tell what’s wrong with your chair. There are no outside fixes that a DIY could apply other than a pillow and a throw cover. The chair needs to be partially disassembled and rebuilt. The economy is bad. Maybe some local craftsman would like the work, especially if you can give them plenty of time to do the job. That way they can use your job as a filler when they catch up on tightly scheduled work. I have saved money by offering that prospect before.
Maybe there is such a thing as a career development class at a local school that would take the job on the cheap like they sometimes do with auto work.
If the sagging is due to material compression, and not springs or structural failings, and you think you can get into the sagging section somehow, you can re-stuff it and replace the batting material, which is fairly inexpensive. Without disassembling the chair this is going to require slicing into the seat cushion at some point and re stuffing it, then re-sewing with heavy duty thread and a big, curved upholstery needle. Cost of these materials is only a few bucks, but it will have a seam where you went into it.
