Can we agree that family is a mixed blessing?

Not very recent, but I remember the time my Dad in Toronto wanted to visit my sister in Calgary. This would have been 2003 or so. He decided to drive–see the country from the ground, and have an adventure. He was in his mid-70s then, but in fairly good health, and as long as he wore his glasses, he could see to drive. So, off he went.

Not long after he arrived, I (living in Toronto then) got a phone call. Could I fly out and drive Dad and his car back to Toronto? Seems the car trip over 2000 miles took more out of him than he thought it would, and he wasn’t sure if he could drive back to Toronto safely. So, I made a one-way airline reservation, and went to Calgary. I spent a couple of days with my sister and her family and Dad, and then Dad and I hit the road.

I drove pretty much the whole way. In fairness, it was kind of fun; and in spite of Dad’s protestations that he should be paying for everything as he didn’t expect to have to ask for my help, we split the cost of gas and meals and inexpensive motels. But still–what else can you do when your father calls from 2000 miles away and asks you to drive his car home?
