Can we expect a high-profile "defector" at Dem Con?

One of the thing that hurt John Kerry in '04 was the speech at the Republican convention by Senator Zell Miller, a nominal Democrat. Lieberman’s speech in '08, not so much impact, but he did it.

Can we expect the same kind of thing at the Democratic convention next week where a prominent Republican will appear to speak out against Trump? You know the kind of speech I’m talking about. “I’m a Republican, but this crap is too much…” Who could it be? Who would you like to see?

I think Jeb! might be a possibility. Since leaving the White House Bill Clinton has established a good relationship with the Bush family so…

Ted Cruz shows up, like Dylan going electric. The crowd would go insane.

Hardly. Democrats loathe Cruz.

Who doesn’t?

Mitt Romney would get a pretty good reception I think. I disagree with his politics but he seems like he actually has real values that he stands by and is genuinely appalled by Trump. And at 69 he seems like he’s done with running for office, so he doesn’t have anything to lose.

I don’t think the likelihood is very high, but maybe Lindsey Graham. To the extent I paid attention to the Republican primary race, Graham seemed not entirely insane. And he has criticized Trump.

Romney already came out with a vehement anti-Trump effort. He might be game for speaking at the D convention.

ETA: dammit, coremelt!

So far most high profile nevertrumpers are supporting Gary Johnson.

Well, yeah, that was the point of the comparison…

I hope the Dems don’t do that. Allowing Cruz any kind of presence will only taint the convention. Cruz is so universally loathed that it would call Clinton’s judgement into question.

I’d like to see Romney appear. I actually have a lot of respect for the man. He has values and stands by them honestly. I may disagree with him on many issues but there’s a lot to be said for taking a stand and staying there.

Cruz wants to sweep in come 2020 and pick up the pieces with an “I told you so” after Trump loses. Speaking at the DNC would guarantee that never happens. Cruz has less of a chance of speaking at the DNC than my cat does.

From what I’ve seen and read all of the prominent anti-Trump Republicans such as Romney, Bush or Graham, have been very careful to make the point they think Hillary is pretty damn awful as well.

Given that I seriously doubt any prominent member of the GOP will show up and speak at the convention next week.

I could see a liberal Rockefeller Republican like Colin Powell showing up, but he already endorsed Obama twice, so there’d be no surprise or “wow” factor.

Anybody who did that would no longer be welcome at the Republican Club, so any of their notable pols who continue to think Trumpism is a temporary illness the party is suffering are not going to do it.

most of them, yea, publicly, but I wonder how many of them really are behind the curtain. And some of them are publicly going to Clinton, like Hank Paulson, Mark Salter, and a few other.

If there were to be an analogue to Zell Miller, it would likely be someone with little to lose, as Zell had; he was not seeking re-election.

To be fair, your cat would have better policy positions.

Jokes aside, I don’t expect to see any “Republican” to speak at the DNC unless they are changing parties because NeverTrump failed and/or they have decided their political career is over.

That’s kind of the point. The loathing is mutual. Cruz showing up to support Sec. Clinton would be a huge possible appeal to Never-Trumpers.

Roger Stone said this morning, “Why do people hate Cruz at first sight? To save time.”

Which is why Romney seems possible (but unlikely). He’s 69, and seems to just be serving on company boards now and not running for office anymore.
