I love Beverly Cleary but clearly she stole the story from 101 Dalmatians.
can we make (work) socks with better elastic? I can’t tell you how many pairs I’ve thrown out over the years only because the elastic was shot & they would puddle around my ankles. Same goes for gym shorts & sweats…why can’t the elastic last as long as the fabric does?
Well, I did get them. Plus about 50 bucks worth of other stuff…
And now I’m having a Costco hot dog. A morning well spent.
Thanks. I shall investigate those.
They’ll last longer if you air-dry(or low heat) and don’t pull too hard on the fabric but the elastic material will wear out eventually. The very stretching that you want puts a strain on the structure of the elastic material.
sweats, at most, get 10-15 mins in the dryer, just enough to take the most of the moisture out of them & then are hung to dry.
I appreciate the posts on your thread. My coworkers think I’m obsessed because I always carry an extra pair, stuffed in the same jacket pocket. I used to buy only the cheap ones from the big box stores but the brands you write about sound good too.
Remember that Costco has a generous return policy. If you don’t like it, they’ll take it back. I think you know this though as you said “I will try them.” But still, we’ve had a recent discussion on the SDMB about the “ethics” of returning stuff you don’t like. Some people would never. But I say if you don’t like them, you should!
Harrumph! I’ll bet they say it like it’s a bad thing.
I herewith submit my report.
I got the socks back to the apartment and took one out of the bundle. (I’m curious that @ParallelLines’ wife thought they were a bit thin. I guess they are thin for warmth, but they struck me as thick for my purposes.) While I was holding the sock and pondering it, my across-the-hall neighbor came over to see the results of my sock seeking and other Costco items. (We make our own fun here at The Home.) She snatched the sock out of my hand exclaiming, “Wow! These are fantastic! Mind if I try them on?” She sat down, bared her foot, and put on the sock, still gushing over them. They were the kind of comments someone utters when they see an adorable kitten or puppy and want to hold it. In short, she wanted the socks. And in short, I gave them to her for Christmas. TBH, I did feel a little nub of a seam in the toe area. Not saying that @running_coach led me astray, and I can’t verify that that would have been a problem since I never even got to try on the sock. I’m using that mostly for rationalization. The quest continues.
Costco has good undergarments of all sorts. It’s where I buy my boxer briefs, warm socks and ankle socks (Puma). They also have good quality warm outerwear.
Very thin for warmth. And thin by the standards of the socks we buy for winter 'round here. It WAS 7F Tuesday morning when we got up to shovel snow ya know.
I swear by Balega socks.

My wife gets me a couple pairs of long ones every year for Christmas:
And a couple pairs of short ones every year for my birthday in spring:
They are on the expensive side, though.
To be honest, I want to replace socks or underwear when the elastic starts to fail, or the socks lose cushioning (unlike the OP, I like thicker, cushier socks). I’ve even made a point of not putting new socks or underwear in the clothes dryer but instead air-drying them, because I hate losing the cushioning in the form of dryer lint.
Costco will give you a refund no questions asked if you’re not happy with the purchase. You don’t even need the receipt, they can look it up using your membership card. No hassle unlike many other places.
It’s not at all like 101 Dalmatians. It’s a tiny bit like Lady and the Tramp.
Every once in awhile, I run across a sock with a badly sewn toe seam. After it starts sawing my toe, I turn it inside out so the seam is on the outside. This works especially well with plain, thin socks where whatever weave they might have is the same inside out.
I have several pairs of socks that I wear inside out for that reason.
You could/should look for athletic socks for seamless construction.
Good idea.
