That book is totally intimidating to me, too! But…I need to challenge myself. Everything I knit for my kid (12 yo) gets fairly inexpensive, superwash type yarn.
So the bag is going to be the death of me. I added stripes in yellow, orange, and red (to match the variegated yellow, orange, and red within the brown yarn) – each 3 rows wide, separated by one row of the brown. It’s looking handsome, if a a bit 70s-style. I am just not quuuiiiite sure I have enough left of the brown to finish it without adding more colored rows. I’ll get 5 rows out of what I have left. Is it enough? Felted crochet tends to shrink considerably more in width than it does in height. gnaws fingernails.
Meanwhile, my inner nerd is craving to make this and I’ve also been pondering a solar system set (with Jupiter & Saturn not-to-scale).
I want to knit a bag now! I’m thinking I want a tote bag I can sling over my shoulder, something I can use for travel.
I just finished a baby hat for my cousin’s kid - I missed his 1st birthday and even though I’m not very fond of my cousin and his wife I feel like I should give the kid something. I meant to knit two hats but I only have heavier yarn, so maybe I’ll knit a scarf (with my wool/cashmere stash, kid better appreciate it!).
The yarn site I use has started carrying some affordable merino wool yarn, which I am very excited about. I want to try knitting Swing Thing for my boyfriend’s niece - both because I adore her and I find adult sized sweaters intimidating.
I need some advice on a baby blanket. I am a beginner at crochet and decided to make a blanket for a friend of mine who is having a baby. I have made blankets in the past and they were always a bit small so I wanted a bigger one. Well it is a bit too long and now I fear that in order to make the proportions right it will need to be big enough to cover a small country. So I was thinking of folding the blanket over to make to double thickness and sewing the sides together by weaving some ribbon through it. Does that make sense? Has anyone ever tried anything like this before or am I doomed to be making this thing until the kid graduates?
Ludy, I suspect that, unless you used sockweight or laceweight yarn for the blanket, folding it over is just going to make it look like a folded over blanket.
That said, can you just try basting it together in a way that is easy to undo and see how it looks and feels?
Swing thing looks really cute, Haze. I have a 3-year-old honorary niece who would look very cute in that. But I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be able to knit it before it got too warm to wear this year. Maybe for next year.
Also, I have this cardigan queued as my first sweater because it’s also a top-down, no-seam item.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I finished my nephew’s hobo gloves yesterday afternoon, which pleased him greatly. I’m now knitting a pair for my brother, whose hands get cold at every turn. I’m starting with the same yarn as my nephew’s, but will knit him another, lighter pair from nicer yarn. Not too nice, as he’s prone to losing things, but I figured they’d be a nice birthday present.
Good thing about Ireland is that there is no season that does not require a sweater.
I do want to knit a light cardigan for myself that I can carry around in summer (for buildings that use too much air conditioning).
Just an FYI I gave in and joined Ravelry, so I joined the SDMB group too. I was getting jealous that I couldn’t look at some of the pics on this thread
Question 1: Why can’t you enter a yarn, then just sublist the different colors you have? I must have a million skeins of Lion brand Homespun. Just thinking about entering them all makes me tired.
Question 2: If you have bought a pdf pattern from a designer in the past, and that designer sells that same pattern on Ravelry, is there any way to upload the pattern into your library without re-buying it?
-
I gave up entering all my yarn after about two entries. I’ve decided to keep my own excel file to keep track of my yarn - Ravelry’s system isn’t very helpful.
-
I don’t think so, no, not without contacting the designer and arranging something separately.
Today’s Rhymes With Orange is particularly fitting…
In a fit of thriftiness, I’m cutting up my old t-shirts to make tarn (t-shirt yarn). To my eternal surprise, I’m finding it quite attractive!
Does anyone have any old t-shirts they’ve been wanting to throw out but “they’re still good for something!” I would love to have them!
there are a few requirements:
-no seam up the side
-no logo covering most of the front or back (a small logo is fine - it’s just that you can’t use the logo part of the t-shirt)
-stains and small holes are fine.
-bonus points for anything in the grey – dusty blue – dusty green – brown/tan color range. Or white.
I finished my first real* stranded project! Owl Mittens! I’m really happy with how these turned out and it was a quick, easily manageable project. I think I might be addicted. I’m going to try Swedish Fish Mittens next, using Knit Picks Chroma.
- I’ve done a tiny bit of stranded knitting before, like a few rows on the arms of a child’s sweater, but nothing major.
Neat!
Those are adorable! I’d be interested to know what you think of the Chroma. No one I know has tried it yet.
Those Swedish Fish Mittens are so cute. Want.
I finished a scarf. Very straightforward, but it’s finished rather than half undone in a bag in the yarn closet or next to the sofa.
I did not like the Chroma for the Swedish Fish mittens - it was too floppy, if you know what I mean. I was having trouble doing the colorwork with it, but someone who’s more experienced with stranding would probably have an easier time. I knit an inch or so and then frogged them. Not sure what I’m going to do with it - maybe some socks. I got a ball of the worsted, too, and made my son a little scarf (just a 2x2 rib). For that purpose, it was great. It’s VERY soft and squishy and the colors are very pretty. He’s a little sensitive to itchy yarn, but he’s quite happy with it wrapped around his neck and up against his face. I’d buy Chroma again. It would make a great kid’s sweater.
That’s really pretty!
Nice scarf!
I have a number of project on the go at the moment, but the one I’m trying to finish is Swing Thing - I have until June to finish it, that’s when we fly to Belfast to see the boyfriend’s family (I’m knitting it for his niece). I’ve also started this bag - my first bag, so I’m very excited to see how it turns out.
I’m trying this in red. never shaped a sweater before so it is a challenge.
My name is Hello Again and I’m a yarnaholic.
At the farmer’s market today they had hand-spun, hand dyed lush merino, that was $2 off because there was a break somewhere in the skein. I came THIS close to buying three skeins in blue and two shades of green… at $17 a skein… I SO did not need that 51 dollars worth of pretty yarn. I was a good girl and didn’t buy it. But now I has a sad.
Thanks y’all for helping me stay strong.
