Canada loses its Identity [Hockey Jerseys]

Yesterday, CBC unveiled the new hocky jersey to be worn by our national junior hockey team at the IIHF World Junior Championship in 2010 in Saskatchewan.
It is a green jersey.

I don’t give a flying frick why Hockey Canada chose to depart from tradition. It may be Saskatchewan’s colour, but it is CANADA’s team and we always wear red.
It is simply Canada’s colour and most of us like it.

I suspect conservative influence to undermine the association between Canada’s colour and the colour of the Liberal party. They chose to introduce a different colour in a somewhat less high profile international event to get us used to the idea that Canada can be blue as well and doesn’t have to be red.

Its going to be painful to watch Canada play in these games.

They’re only wearing them twice. “Canada’s National Junior Team will wear the jerseys twice – once in a pre-competition game and once during the championship.”

They’ll be wearing the red and white when they win their 6th straight gold medal.

Oh what melodrama. Did you throw this big of a fit over the mustard yellow jerseys for the 2004 World Cup?

Or the black jerseys in 2006. Now the mustard yellow ones are ugly but it’s not a conspiracy by Harper and I typically blame everything on the Conservatives.

I kind of liked the mustard yellow ones. I also recall seeing clips of the world juniors wearing powder blues back in the early 80s.

Ahahahahahahahahahaha. You think a change in hockey jersey colors are a barometer of the EVIL CONSERVATIVES trying to destroy Canada from within.

I don’t imagine the Conservatives are hatching a conspiracy to upset what years of tradition and certain pieces of legislation have dictated are the official colours of Canada. From this Canadian government page on Canadian symbols:

So a hockey jersey is green to honour the host province. I don’t believe the colour of a hockey jersey that is to be worn twice is going to somehow overcome tradition and rewrite all that legislation. Besides, if the Tories were really hatching a conspiracy to undo all that Liberal Party red, why wouldn’t they make the jerseys blue? I always understood green to be one of the NDP’s colours. Or, naturally, the Green Party’s.

You were writing a really interesting post up until this silly, paranoid nonsense.

No conservative conspiracy, but dear OG those are ugly.

I’m not sure honouring the CFLs ugliest uniforms is such a great idea.

Green pride!

Okay, the green jerseys are weird, but there obviously is a precedent, and honouring the host province doesn’t bother me. Conservative conspiracy - heh. I truly hope the federal Conservatives are making better use of their time than designing Junior-level hockey jerseys to subvert the nation.

i thought the conservative conspiracy is supposed to be for the Olympic clothing not the green Junior’s jerseys. The Olympic emblem was supposed to have like a big “C” on it like the symbol of the Conservative Party.

If Canada’s identity is defined by the color of its junior hockey jerseys… no, nevermind. The jokes write themselves, but I can’t bring myself to type 'em.

Green is the colour. Hockey is the game.

:stuck_out_tongue:

If Stephen Harper were picking the uniforms they’d be wearing sweater vests.

C’mon. I wasn’t serious about the conservative angle.

Okay, that made me snort out loud. At least they’d be warm.

You Yanks just don’t get the vitriol and heated tempers aroused by the intersection of politics and hockey up here! Move it back! :stuck_out_tongue:

Them’s fighting words! We’ll see what you think when the Jolly Green Giants are drinking from the Cup again this year!

You mean when the Larks are drinking from the Cup, right?

You pick odd things to fight over. I actually don’t particularly like the Al’s uniforms either, though they are much better than the Riders’! The Ti-Cats all black are the best, IMHO. Ninja kitties!

pfft. they’ll coast to the Grey Cup and then fold, just as in 2000, 2003, 2005, 2006, and 2008. that’s the problem with being the dominant team in the weaker division. The Riders, on the other hand, have to fight for every scrap, and win when they’re not supposed to.
