I am not that big a fan of the game. Not that I think there is anything wrong with it, I understand the rules and the whole idea and all. I went to my first pro game recently and something kept sticking out. Hockey jerseys. Jerseys everywhere, and not even for the home team, hell not even for the two teams playing. I don’t get it. If you go to a hockey game between the Dallas Stars and the San Jose Sharks, why wear a Chicago Blackhawks jersey? Personally I have always felt the entire wearing a jersey to a game thing rather odd, do you think you’re going to get some play time? But at least the people wearing Dallas or San Jose jerseys seemed to have a reason to wear the jersey. I just could not get the idea of wearing a hockey jersey, no matter what the team, league, decade (there were even hockey style jerseys from TV shows, car dealerships etc there) just for the fact that you will be near a hockey game. I have never seen anything like that at a Dallas Cowboy or Texas Ranger game. Maybe it’s just me.
Well, wearing a jersey to a game is ok by me, but I am sick to death of seeing them all over the place as “fashionable” men’s casual wear. Same thing with hats. Stupid, stupid, stupid! We need a movement like the Mods to take over and get young men to dress sharp for a change.
I loves me the hockey.
You know how much jerseys set ya back?
They are pretty expensive and I don’t think they are suitable for casual Fridays. It’s not like a person has many places where they can wear their jersey.
It shows NHL spirit. A love for the game.
Sometimes… no really… sometimes, I wear my hiking boots when I AM NOT EVEN HIKING!
I’m crazy like that.
Man! First those moderators are locking down threads, now they’re “taking over” and getting sulky teens to dress nice. What’s next?
See, MissBungle, you spout off in a whole bunch of threads getting me to not like you and then you post this. You love hockey. And it takes away the loathing. Stop that and let me get back to my wonderful happy loathing would ya?
A jersey shows support for your team, or for hockey in general. Alot of sports do this… look at basketball fer cryin out loud.
Wear the jersey. Support your team!
Oh… and GO LEAFS GO!!!
Hey Liquid…
Well in the north…there are alot of hockey fans who wear those jerseys to games.
Maybe hockey hasn’t been down south long enough for you to appreciate how loyal (LET’S GO RED WINGS) fans are wearing their expensive jerseys??
I agree…they shouldn’t be worn on casual Fridays! But hockey fans are the most loyal of all sports fans in my honest opinion.
I agree with Canuck…every other sports fan wears hats, t-shirts, etc for other pro sports…why not hockey!!!
I’m the type that supports players rather than teams. I also have a number of hockey jersey. One of which is a Jason Allison Jersey when he played for the London Knights. A few years ago, I saw the Bruins play the Leafs and I wore my Jason Allison jersey to support him as I am neither a Leafs nor a Bruins fan (although I don’t hate either team). I am, however an Allison fan. That is why I would wear a London Knights jersey to a Leafs vs. Bruins game.
In your case, there’s probably someone on the Sharks or the Stars that used to be on the Blackhawks. I’m too lazy to check, but I’m fairly confident there’s at least one.
because they cost $350 dollars so people think they look cool in them…
I agree that about the support of the game, and dont get me wrong, I was not trying to put down hockey or hockey fans, I thought it was a great game and i enjoyed it. I can see the supporting a player also, what I as meaning though was wearing a jersey of a different team, different or no player just because you’re going to a hockey game. I like boo’s answer, that is all i was after.
But Boo’s answer is not correct. And my grammar isn’t either.
I’d have to agree with mayberrydan here. They are most likely supporting players.
Although, when I lived in SFO before the San Jose Sharks were around, I used to go to the Cow Palace for preseason games. I never wore a jersey (not really my style), but I would go and see any teams play I could. I was trying to support the NHL and show that there was an interest in the city. Apparently it work, although not before I left.
Do you have a problem with people wearing gloves to baseball games? I don’t wear my jersey to the office, but I will at times wear it other than to games (or for wrestling matches with opposing fans at Dopefests, that vanity-searching Tripler will be here soon :p). I have not, however, worn it to a game at another arena unless my team was playing.
And in one case a couple of years ago, the JERSEY got into the game - A player (think it was Theo Fleury) got high-sticked and cut. There was a short timeout while he was assisted on the ice, a quick patch done, and he wanted to stay out for the power play. The refs cited the rule he could not play with a bloody jersey. He borrowed the jersey from a fan sitting near the bench and wore hers (it was a Fleury jersey) so the jersey got into the game. (If she was smart, she asked for it back rather than a new replacement, a game-worn jersey is worth much bucks. 400-500 for scrubs, 4 figures easy for good players, 5 for the top players. The NHL sells them.)
You know you’re a hockey fan when… you have your team initials and your season ticket section as your SDMB username.
Anyway, I used to buy the jerseys with name and number but after all the trades and free agency I lost the financial means to keep doing this. Now I have my Ranger jerseys w/o any name or numer and I know they will last longer than any of the players.
NYR407 you know that with the talent that Slats has assembled, your team will be together for a long time, at the top of the standings…
Oh sorry, I was wrong… $100Million doesn’t buy what it used to…
(Sorry … I couldn’t resist. But seriously… with the team you have you shouldbe #1 in the East…)
GO LEAFS GO!
I have several jerseys. Some were gifts, one I bought, but I also have a game-worn autographed jersey I won from the Capitals. The last game of the season, they picked fans at random to go down on the ice after the game, pick a name out of a bucket, and that player would give you his away jersey (they hadn’t worn them that night.) So I have a signed Andrei Nikolishin jersey. He’s not a superstar, but it’s still pretty cool.
I was in that boat once, NYR407… (LET’S GO ISLANDERS!!!)
Well ** LiquidChaos **, the next time that I go to a Redskins/Cowboys game I’m going to wear my Blackhawks jersey. That will really blow your mind.
[hijack]
You can have my hat when you pry it from my cold dead head!
[/hijack]
carry on.
I often wondered why people wore jerseys that didn’t belong to either team playing, or a player. Used to bug me when I went to games.
Then I moved out of state. sigh They have a hockey team in my new city, but I just can’t bring myself to be a fan - yet. I still like a good hockey game, so if I were to attend one, you betcha I’m wearing the one I own. Shows support for the game, my old local team, etc.
Plus, I think I look cute in it
I have quite a few jerseys from my favorite teams:
Home and away Brett Favre #4 Packers jerseys.
A really cool “throwback” #15 Bart Starr Packer jersey. It is made from the old-school heavy cotton material, with sewn-on numbers and stripes.
Home and away Michigan Wolverine football jerseys. The away one is autographed by Michigan coaching legend Bo Schembechler.
A Red Wings jersey that I keep meaning to take to a sporting goods shop to get number 9 (Gordie Howe) put on the back.
Three early 90s game-worn jerseys from the Michigan Wolverines women’s basketball team. I recently got one of them autographed by this season’s graduating seniors, LeeAnn Bies and Raina Goodlow. I have become a major fan of Michigan women’s sports in general in recent years, with basketball probably being my favorite sport.
I tend to wear them on game days, especially if I am actually attending the game in person.
