This is sad. Started a separate thread before reading this.
I loved listening to Stuart McLean.
Suggest that the MND put his hand over his heart as a sign of respect for serving with US soldiers overseas. Educated guess.
Every country has its own traditions and way of doing things. It’s true that placing your hand over your heart for the National Anthem is just not the normal practice in Canada. Any special reason why we should adopt it? In a country where we have overwhelming cultural influence from the US, it is pretty understandable that we sometimes take pride in some of the small things that set us apart.
The original subject was doing it in the US for the US anthem.
I really love the irony in Trump and Trudeau meeting and it being Trump who has made more of an effort to keep his election promises. Joe Trudeau’s liberal roots didn’t take long to show through.
I wonder if there’s a Trump Meter like the Trudeau Meter. I suppose you’d need to add in a GOP version as well to take into account the nature of the system.
While it feels like forever, Trump has only been failing for a few weeks - give him some time.
Appreciate the clarification. I’ve seen a clip of President Obama in Canada putting his hand over his heart for the US anthem, but not for the Canadian. If I was visiting in the US, I wouldn’t do the hand over heart thing for either anthem.
I don’t care if it is adopted or not. It is a meaningless gesture that only hits my radar because some fellow Canadian was indoctrinated to not do it solely because a specific country is doing it.
Yet we tolerate people’s funny headgear and other arbitrary practices all the time no matter how ridiculous or contentious but because it is American we object to it.
So, we’ve had about 105cm of snow in the last 10 days. I’ll stand for the American anthem with my hand on my heart if it helps end the snow.
We’ve had about half of that in Ottawa, and I find it ridiculous. I can’t imagine twice the amount.
I’ll take a little of it off your hands. We’re in the middle of a week of +5 temps in freaking February, and probably won’t have any snow cover left by the end of it. It jest ain’t right.
Apparently that’s tomorrow in Ottawa +6
It seems like the last couple of years in South Eastern NB that the snow holds off during December and January and hits all at once in February. I like the big piles of snow in the yard and the feeling like you are driving through a mini-canyon as you go up the road. I just really hate that it hits all at once.
Schools have been closed for 3 days this week and my wife is going crazy. She was so happy that schools opened today. I guess having a moody 11 year old girl at home all day is a bit of a trial.
I think you’re missing the point. We don’t do it because it’s not our tradition, and has the has the added disadvantage of being pretty sappy.
Again, the MND served overseas, alongside US Troops, and may have been with a team that lost a few - recognizing that, I don’t think it’s beyond the realm of possibility that he does it out of respect for those he served with?
Got my Parks Canada pass today.
Brian
yeah, baby!
Yay! I’m going to be spending a lot of this summer flipping between Kouchibouguac and Fundy parks.
{{sigh}} must be nice to live within easy driving distance of a national park.
I think the nearest Canadian national park to me is Pukaskwa at 625 driving miles
There are =provincial parks that are closer, but the pass is only for national parks, right?
