Canadope Café 2018: Chatting Around the Campfire

Nothing special here, really. A Blue Jays game at the local sports bar, a trip to the local racebook to bet horse racing (I didn’t win), and once again, putting off the yardwork that needs doing. All in all, a nice, relaxing weekend.

Though that yardwork will need doing. But maybe not this weekend.

Yearly camping event with long-time friends. Great long weekend.

Day one: five wheel rollerblading and biking. Day two: erecting scaffolding and chalet painting. Day 3: taking folks from NZ hiking and paddling on Superior.

Oops - I forgot to mention - I did that too! It’s exhausting, that mental strain.

I wish I could have said “yearly holiday Monday golf game,” but this was the first year my friends and I didn’t. My usual golf buddies were unavailable, and I didn’t feel like playing by myself.

Curious about something, and maybe our Cana-Dopers can help.

Does anybody not in Toronto ever look at the Toronto Star online? On occasion, I’ll check the Toronto Star for Toronto news (as many of you know, Toronto is my hometown, and it’s nice to know what’s been happening there). So imagine my surprise recently when I Googled “thestar.ca,” clicked the first link presented like I always have, and got: “The Star: Calgary,” with all kinds of Calgary news items.

No big deal, and I can follow a link to the Toronto news site. But it got me wondering–would Gorsnak and Northern Piper get “The Star: Saskatchewan”? Would Muffin get “The Star: Thunder Bay”? Would Leaffan get “The Star: Ottawa”?

Could you folks try it and see what you get? And anybody in any other province, could you give it a try too? Like I said, I’m curious. Thanks!

When I go to The Star’s options page I see the following cities

Toronto
Vancouver
Edmonton
Calgary
Halifax

No Ottawa (not too strange really) and no Montreal which is.

Nope - when I look at it i always get Toronto news.

It’s a Toronto paper. Does Ontario exist outside of the GTA?

I typed in “the star.ca” and got Toronto. I’m on my phone and my GPS location is no secret though.

Occasionally I do read The Star, mostly for Leafs news during the hockey season, but I’ll browse around. It’s certainly a Liberal-friendly paper. Not that there’s anything wrong with that! I like varying editorial slants on stories and opinions.

Thanks, folks. Interesting results.

I guess the Star’s server is seeing my IP address in Alberta, and deciding that I want to see Calgary news. Like I said, it’s no biggie to click through to Toronto news, so I guess I’ll do that.

Thanks again!

The “Star” in Vancouver is a commuter paper officialy called StarMetro, I think. It’s a rebrand of the old daily paper Metro. You can read the short history on wikipedia: StarMetro (newspaper) - Wikipedia Some time in the 2000s we got two free dailys pop up simultaneously in Vancouver: 24 hours and Metro, 24 Hours was full of disturbingly biased editorials, Metro was/is actually pretty nice, no editorials and the news articles were well balanced and ranged from local to international.

I used to read the Metro all the time at the coffee shop. When it got rebranded they changed the look a bit - I think they’re using smaller fonts and less line spacing, presumably to fit more adverts - so I don’t read it as often. Anyways, thestar.ca redirects me to the Vancouver section of thestar.com, same for metronews.ca. The boxes on the streets still display the URL for metronews.ca.

TBay gets Toronto news from the Toronto Star.

The Rogers Cup tennis tournament is going on in my backyard. I’m not used to seeing so many people at my usually quiet little metro (subway) station in the evening. Though still nowhere near as crowded as things get on a typical weekday rush hour.

First time for me: +40 C, yesterday here in Saskatchewan. I’ve had -40 before, but I don’t think I’ve ever had +40.

That is positively un-Canadian.

I don’t care. I’m loving this weather guys.
Last summer was a bummer.

We het +40C here this past Friday. It set a record for the hottest day ever recorded in this city.

I’ve encountered +40C once before, but it years ago, and it was in Toronto. I haven’t experienced it since, until this past Friday.

Have any of you ever been asked to serve for jury duty?

I haven’t, and just today I learned of a friend of mine who was asked to complete a questionnaire.

This is only the second person I’ve known who MAY be selected for jury duty. Maybe I’m hanging with the wrong crowd?

I served on a coroner’s jury back in 1989, in Toronto.

Not sure how I was selected for a coroner’s jury (I did receive what I guess was the typical questionnaire a few weeks before I got a call asking me to show up), but it was a fascinating experience.
