What the fuck are you talking about? It’s been used against the left since before I was born.

The only thing that was new about “cancel culture” was that it started hitting people on the right, and all of a sudden they invented a concern about free speech, that predictably lasted exactly as long as they weren’t in power.

Okay… social media means that everyone may face consequences. But that’s not necessarily a good thing. If somebody you know in real life makes a tasteless joke that is offensive, the people who personally interact with them face to face can probably form a better judgement of their overall character than strangers who only sees their text messages online

I think we can say that some things are unethical but don’t necessarily have to be illegal. I think it’s unethical to fire someone for supporting some politician. I don’t think it should be illegal. I’d probably label more Democrat firings unethical than Republican firings, but their employers both have the right to fire.

The case of Jimmy Kimmel though is just straight-up unconstitutional government censorship. That’s a whole different kettle of fish.

We casually accept “at will” employment in this country, but that’s because we’re making a policy decision to do so. At will employment wasn’t handed down to us on stone tablets from God. It’s completely within the realm of possibility that we could choose to give workers more protection from being arbitrarily fired for any reason or for no reason.

LOL, what are you even talking about? I have another thread which details over 300 times times the Right has had a Culture War shitfit over one thing or another, with well over 100 examples of the Right trying to “cancel” something or someone they didn’t like.

Remember when they whined about Taylor Swift? Or Gillette? Or the Dixie Chicks? Or anyone who opposes the 2nd Amendment? Hell, the Right spent years trying to cancel Jane Fonda, as much a non-entity as Jimmy Kimmel. Anita Bryant made a career, and millions of dollars, trying to cancel gay people. And the 20-year war fought against Hillary Clinton was a textbook example of cancel culture long before “CC” became a phrase in itself.

Since then, we had the “cancellation of the Olympics”, the “Cancellation of Cracker Barrel (2)” (changing logos), JD Vance Jizz Cups (making fun of Tim Walz’s wife using IVF), the Gun-Emoji cancellation, cancelling a school having bathrooms with stalls and doors, and the current “Cancel everyone who doesn’t properly care about Kirk’s death”, my God, the list is so long I had to take 3 GD posts to highlight just the ones we remember.

For myself, I remember two high school teachers:

  1. The gay English teacher who had dead animals thrown into his classroom and who was almost fired because he gave students a list of classic works by gay authors, and at least one of the works spoke explicitly about sex. It wasn’t required reading, but nonetheless he was treated as a pedophile.

  2. The conservative history teacher who sneeringly told students–knowing that some of them were gay–that homosexuals should be thrown into prison, and told students–some of whom were Black–that slavery was the best thing to ever happen to Black people since it introduced them to Christianity and civilization. He was lauded as a devil’s advocate.

So don’t come at me about how the Left is the driver of cancel culture.

One thing I’ve noticed: Correct me if I’m wrong, but have any Republicans proposed any concrete solutions to “cancel culture”? They’d have to do something about “at will employment”, and that wouldn’t be very business friendly, now would it? How does voting Republican change anything? If anything, having Republicans in office simply energizes the Left, because they feel powerless and want to do something to hold the other side accountable.
