Candy bars that must be brought back

Bonnomo’s Turkish Taffy. Came in Vanilla, Strawberry, Chocolate, and Banana flavors. Place in freezer and then smack it on a hard surface to break into small pieces.

Yes yes YES!!!
I want to add Mint Skittles to the the list. I don’t know if they count as a candy bar per se, but I adored them.

Fizzies from the 70’s. They were awesome, they make them now but they have a sugar subsitute that makes them terrible. I remember in junior high we would buy them and stick them in your mouth to let them fizz and foam up. They were awesome. You were supposed to put them in water, but I don’t know anyone who did that.

A good friend of mind and I bought some a few years ago from a candy company that specialized in nostalgia candy and they had reformulated the Fizzies. Sucked big time. We gave them to the kids to drop into the toilet and make the water fizz!

I understand they are coming out in 2010 with a revised formula. Might try them again.

Fizzies tasted disgusting even back in the '60s. But I wanted them anyway, because they were just too cool. And yes, the greatest fun was sticking them directly in your mouth and letting them froth.

Came in here to suggest that one. I loved those.

OTOH, I’m diabetic now, and shouldn’t have 'em anyway. Maybe it’s for the best.

Cuban Lunch.

Never heard of it. Great name.

Sugar Mama’s were the chocolate version of a Sugar Daddy.

You can still buy Sugar Daddys but the Sugar Mama was discontinued long ago.
Bit O Honey are still available.

I wouldn’t risk any sticky candy now. I got crowns and can’t risk damaging them.

I liked the Nestle Alpine White bar, but the one I really really really wish would come back was the Wispa bar from the early 80s. It was like the Areo bar that everyone but us in the US gets regularly (they do sell them sparingly in New England, though - go to Shaws and check international foods) but instead of being flat was shaped like a milky way or snickers bar. I loved the bubbles. There seems to have been another bar called Choco-lite that was similar, but people describe it as having a yellow wrapper and Wispa purple. Apparently they have brought it back…in the UK. sigh.

Bun
Lanzi’s (a local Chicago candy, I think)

It’s funny how most of the major candy bars have been around forever…it’s like we decided to never leave the Golden Age of Candy Bars of the mid-20th Century.

Hershey rarely discontinues candy bars. They have a built-in advantage because stores tend to stock Hershey.

A lot of the “lost” candy in this thread was made by smaller candy companies. Their product is hard to find because the stores give most of the shelf space to Hershey. I get a lot of Candy at Walgreens because they stock the small companies. Walgreens is the best place to find Chunky, Goo Goo Clusters, etc. They are hard to find anywhere else.

Two more:

Caravelle. Yummy caramel, crisped rice, and chocolate. Made by Peter Paul before they got bought out by Cadbury and then Hershey. Same format as the other Peter Paul bars, Mounds and Almond Joy: two pieces in one wrapper.

SweeTarts. Yes, there’s something on the market now called SweeTarts, but they’re nothing at all like the ones of my youth. The new ones are hard as rocks, and differently flavored, shaped, and packaged. Real SweeTarts were easily chewed, lens-shaped, and packaged loose in a gold envelope.

What do you call those turning points, those incidents that are not quite life changing events like a car accident, but demarcations between youth and adulthood … maybe Truth About Santa moments would do, or maybe Golden Dancers.

Anyway, I’m six or seven years old and I finally got my first Chunky bar. I’d seen them advertised and had my heart set on the most intense candy experience imaginable. I was so happy, all silvery and shiny and huuuuuuuuugggggeeeee! Oh man, I can still feel a hint of that absolutely innocent glee, that spark of magic that can only be truly seen by a child, that pure essence of joy, captured at the point of a Red Rider BB gun.

And then …

And then who the fuck put nuts and raisins in this candy bar, and why didn’t they tell me that before I ate it?!?!?! What a horrible moment. Big block of chocolate my ass … big block of chocolate with freakin’ nuts and raisins in it. That’s some cruel shit right there.

Oh, and bring back the Marathon bar.
ETA: For the white chocolate bar missing crowd, enjoy (YouTube). Man, what a jingle.

Delfa Roll Danish Ribbons. Mmmm… God, I miss those.

I miss Apollo bars. Never been able to find them since the early 90s, for some reason.

I think it was called “Choc-o-Lat,” or something like that; it was similar to the Aero bar with the “whipped” chocolate, but the sections were thicker.

I swear the Nestle Alpine White bar is still available in my area; I’ll check it out and report back.

How about another white-chocolate treat: the Zero bar.

Yes. With the little yellow candy dot on the end.

I was going to mention this one, but I thought it was Choco-de-lite (for delight). I love the blocky (not flat) bars. Remember when Chunky had more varieties than they have now?
