Can't edit profile, sometimes can't login

I have been having trouble logging into the SDMB for the past two days. Yesterday I couldn’t log in at all, and today I can log in, but I can’t go to my user profile to change my password. Here are the symptoms:

Yesterday, when I went to the main SDMB page and attempted to use the login thingy at the bottom of the forum list, it gave me a “thank you for logging in, ntucker” message, then put me back on the main page, but the “welcome back, ntucker” was not on the page, and I was not logged in. If I clicked on “User CP”, I was forwarded to the login page with “Unregistered” filled in in the username field. If I entered my username and password there, I’d go to another page that says “thank you for logging in, ntucker”, and then I’d be taken back to the exact same login page with “Unregistered” filled in as the username. I know this isn’t a password issue, since entering the wrong password gave me different results (it told me that I had entered the wrong password). Same results if I tried to do a search or post a message. A coworker who has his own SDMB account was able to log in fine from my computer, so I know cookies are working properly.

Today, I am finally able to log on, and I can apparently post a message (we’ll see if this works). I’m able to get the “welcome back, ntucker” message on the main page, but if I click on “User CP” again, I get the same results as yesterday (login page endless loop).

Any ideas?

Browser / version? Have you read the thread about what to do if you get logged off unexpectedly?

Note: I’m the coworker mentioned. ntucker can’t log in right now in order to post a response, but I can log in from his computer. He’s using IE 6.0 (on XP SP1), and the FAQ for the unexpected logout is not helpful because it suggests changing his profile. Since he can’t get to his profile, he can’t do what it suggests.

Is ntucker able to change his profile from any computer? Has ntucker tried deleting all cookies and trying again?
Otherwise I have no suggestions to offer. Perhaps another SDMB member will come aong with some advice.

ntucker was unable to change his profile from any computer for a while, and was unable to log in from some computers which galt was able to log in from, despite deleting all cookies and temporary internet files. I tried to post this last wednesday, but I was unable to log in.

and for what it’s worth, all seems well now.

In the best manner of computer support technicians everywhere, I can now aim my supercilious eyeball in your direction and intone the magic words “User error.”

And I will maintain that vBulletin is far from perfect software and seems to have some issues surrounding keeping track of user sessions (I am pretty sure I can come up with a reproducible example of the unexpected logout problem on multiple machines), and this particular problem just happened to coincide with the brutal beating SDMB was taking from slashdot.

I see the smiley, but I just wanted you to know this was certainly not user error, in case that’s what you were really thinking. I’d certainly be willing to lend a hand in gathering more info about this problem if it might help get a vBulletin bug fixed.

May I use the occasion to remind the staff of this SDMB-specific issue?: Button links with static sessionID=4cc9cf19… error?

I, for one, am convinced that there are li’l demons what hide in the electronic components of machines to make them do nasty things all unexpectedly.

… he said, swearing at a printer gone suddenly awry.

Yeah. It’s called “software”.

Dex, for what it’s worth, my mom insists that computers operate by virtue of a little Japanese leprechaun who lives inside of it and does all the work. When the repairman comes, all he really does is slip the little guy some sushi and soda bread. Or saki and Guiness, as the case may be.
