Why is it so much harder to log into the SDMB now? I used to be automatically logged on whenever I went to the site - now I’m not, and when I try to post I’m asked to log on, so I do log on (and get the welcome message), and then try to post and it says i’m not again! Even if I enter my name and password on the page with the submitted post, it says I’m not logged in. If I go to “user cp” and log in there, I can post - but what was different before that let me do it so easily?
I have been changing various security settings here and there, so I suspect it’s me, but I can’t find anything in Netscape that looks like the cause…

Yeah, it’s probably a cookies thing. In any case, I’ll shoot this over to ATMB where you’ll get a better response.
this is a kind of follow up question. when i want to go to a thread, sometimes it comes up right away but sometimes it takes as long as two minutes. i have an internet connection. is it just the sheer numbers on here? it does not seem to have to do with any given time of day, i can be here at midnight and it will do the same thing. i realize that this is a free forum, but i for one would be willing to pay a small fee (like $10 a year or something like that) to cover the cost of upgrading. not a flame, just a thought.

Nope, didn’t work. Got sent to another page and logged in again and got thank you message. Try again…
Try manually deleting your cookies and clearing your cache, then returning. This happens to me on occasion, and sometimes this will fix it.
Napier, you did not have “browse board with cookies” turned on.
I have checked this to “YES” and I suspect your board performance will be greatly improved as a result.
Please let me know if this doesn’t do it for you and we’ll investigate other options. Email, please.

And lurker anonymous, yes, sometimes the traffic here is so great that board response is slow as a result. It’s excessive demand as opposed to the amount of supply available at that time.
All I can suggest you do is keep trying and try again.

TubaDiva, I verified “Browse board with cookies turned on” was yes before seeing your post above. Never been there before.
Cleared my cookies.
Went hunting around in Netscape looking for options and preferences to set, but found nothing about cookies and nothing that looked promising.
For the record, these are all issues I haven’t tried before - sure I didn’t change any of these myself…
Logging in in the spaces immediately below this pane, let’s see if it works…
It didn’t. So I cut and pasted the above into a new session with Internet Explorer (I usually use, and was using, Netscape Navigator). Now we’ll try again…
Hey, it works fine in Internet Explorer. I must have spoiled some little switch somewhere in Netscape Navigator. Hmph. I’ll keep looking.
TubaDiva, I did see your request “email please” - sorry, how would I email you? What’s your address? I didn’t mean to ignore you - thanks for the help. But since I can use IE, any problems do appear to be at my end. So if anybody has any suggestions, I’d be most appreciative, but SDMB doesn’t have anything wrong with it.

It’s possible all this started with a powers-of-observation type of an issue.
Now, is there something like that in Netscape that says “Don’t Toss Your Cookies”?
If you’re trying to use the login boxes next to the quick reply box, it’s already known that that doesn’t work well. Nobody is exactly sure why, but the workaround is to just use some other login boxes. The login on the main SDMB page works just fine, so maybe you should get into the habit of logging in there.
I usually can’t find ANYWHERE to log in! And my five or so e-mails to webmaster and moderators asking for help have NEVER gotten a reply. Discouraging! I’d also like to change my password, if I could find where to do it! Any help would be appreciated. If you do offer suggestions and don’t get a thank you from me, it will be because I haven’t been able to log in, again!

Changing your password is easy. Click the User CP (control panel) button at the top right of this page, then click the Edit Password button. I think you can work out the details from there.

Do you all log in at the bottom of the main forums page? Guess I was looking for something a little more obvious (like at the top of the page) to click on for logging in!
