I have tried using google but my PC exploded from the number of replies. Most of which seemed to be very flakey.
There was a programme on C5 (UK) that sounded very convincing when discussing the photos the astronauts took (lights from the wrong direction, wrong skylines, japanese tourist in the background etc) .
I have seen this brilliantly debunked by Fortean Times but I can’t find it on their site.
Please point me in the direction of any reputable sites that debunk the “hoax” theory.
I also got sidetracked on the Fortean Times message board (forteantimes.com) and there is a huge thread in the conspiracies section with both sides arguing it out.
From this it does seem (gut feeling only) that the landings are undoubtedly real but the photos are, at least in part, a bit iffy.
Perhaps they were “touched up” or indeed perhaps some of them are fakes?
No, please don’t be taken in by cranks, loonies, and those in tin-foil hats, owl. The lunar landings were absolutely real and the photographs/televised recordings are not faked.
The “touching up” you are referring to makes me think that you haven’t had much experience in photography. The photos aren’t iffy at all, and all the crank websites that submit that they are are in some other world. In any case, when you are dealing with developing film, there is always an element of style and choice when making the print.
Perhaps you should take into account the TV channel.
Channel 5 is not renowned for its documentaries (unless they’re about sex or celebrities ).
I note that ‘Conspiracy Theory : Did we land on the Moon?’ was sandwiched between a repeat of Martial Law (when the talented Sammo has to retrieve a hijacked transplant heart  ) and King Cobra - ‘A Giant snake attacks a beer festival’.
My TV Guide reviewed the ‘program’ as:
a fun rant which explores the notion that the first moon landing was an elaborate hoax…
If you search for ‘Moon’ in the Humble Opinion forum here, you should get hundreds if not thousands of messages on this debate & I think we do a pretty nice job on it ourselves.
There’s a difference between “touched up” and “faked”. Some images were airbrushed a bit to make them prettier for magazines (and this was done by the media, not by NASA), but the images themselves are real.
Another website besides mine (and thanks as always for the plugs, fellow Dopers) is http://www.clavius.org, which has a lot more detail.
Thank you, Mangetout, that was enough evidence to convince everybody of the truth.
Do you know where these pictures are from? Looks like they are from a TV show.
Note: The above site is linked in an attempt at levity and satire of a particular viewpoint. I in no way doubt the moon landings, in fact, I see them as one of the greatest endeavors ever undertaken and certainly one of the most towering achievements of human ingenuity in the history of the species. That is all.
