I didn’t find any threads about the prequel to Battlestar Galactica.
It will be set on Caprica 50 years before BSG. I hope it’s worth the wait.
What are the thoughts of other BSG dopers?
The Wiki entrymentions a potential spoiler for BSG.
Daniel is both the name for a Cylon and the main character played by Eric Stoltz. The relationship, if only coincidence, was not explained further by Moore.
I’m not a fan of BSG, and have never seen any episodes. But my brother and me were in Las Vegas walking through the mall that connects Mandalay Bay and the Luxor (I think). We were approached by someone asking if we would be willing to watch a TV program, blah, blah, blah.
A “few minutes” of our time translated into spending the next hour and a half watching a really terrible TV show. As we watched, we were supposed to press a green button when we were enjoying what we were watching, a red one when not. That red button got quite a work-out.
After the sucking stopped (nearly an hour later!), we answered an electronic questionnaire where we could explain why we thought it sucked, and in what ways. I took it as the opportunity to mention other non-dreadful SF programming like the new Doctor Who. In brief, I hated every character in this show and didn’t much care for the actors playing the characters. If I ever see an episode of it again, it will be far too soon. I didn’t know the BSG connection until the end when:
A traditional Cylon appeared, scanning red eye lights and everything.
It could just be me. But both me and my brother hated it. But, then again, we’re not the target audience…maybe. I mean, I love SF but I’ve never watched the recent BSG because I’m old enough to remember the original series - cheesy special effects, terrible graphic design and a plot arc only slightly deeper than “Wacky Racers”. All I remember is that I wanted to see every character in this pilot episode die a horrible, painful death.
To be honest, I’m not too excited about it. I don’t think I’ve seen a prequel that’s worth watching, and the premise behind Caprica just sounds tedious to me. I’ll probably check it out, but my hopes aren’t too high for it.
And regarding the spoiler,
The timing doesn’t really work out. The human form Cylons weren’t built until the first Cylon War 40 years ago. This series takes place 50 years ago
I’m fearful that Caprica has come about for the same reason that Galactica '80 did – cheap ass studio executives. They want the same viewership that they got with their flagship show… they just don’t want to pay for it.
Yeah, mostly Galactica was scifi-flavored soap opera, with occasional space porn. But it’s the space porn that drew people in. I’m thinking with Caprica we’ll be getting character exploration episodes, like the unfortunate “Black Market” or the godawful “The Woman King”.
And the set up? makes that seem all the more likely.
Also, as to the Cylons
I think the human-looking Cylons are actually still robots at this point in time – just robots with a human facade. Probably because that would be cheaper to produce.
This is a spoiler about how the pilot ends. Do not click unless you wish to be spoiled.
Eric Stolz’s daughter is horrifically injured, and he transfers her brain into a robotic body - the robotic Cylon. These shiny, chrome cyborgs (complete with red scanner eye) was the father’s attempt to save his daughter. And (if I remember correctly) she’s not happy about it.
I may have some of this wrong. Towards the end, I was just waiting for the thing to end. The acting, with the exception of Eric Stolz, was dreadful. I hated every character in the show under 30…and the majority of the characters were under 30. It was like Glactica 90210.
