They weren’t. Lee was just tired of coming up with origin stories, so thought it would be easy to just come up with a team that had their powers because they were born with them. That’s it. Cite, some interview with Stan Lee from years ago.

I’m honestly surprised that Star Trek didn’t make use of the Holodeck for that sort of thing more often.
My vote for Aunt May has always been Cliff Claven’s mother.
I’d support that - I also think it would be hilarious to cast Betty White, especially if he Vulture shows up to attack.
(I just think the scene could be written hilariously with her)
